The Comms Business magazine has announced the winners of their annual 2014 Comms Business Awards event, which took place last week in London and saw Daisy Wholesale beat competition from ICUK, Zen Internet, Gamma and Virtua1 to secure the Best Internet Service Provider award.

Comparison site Simplifydigital.co.uk has announced the winners of their annual 2014 Customer Choice Awards, which saw all of the biggest broadband ISPs, except BT and EE, win various categories based on their levels of customer satisfaction. But sadly you won’t find any smaller ISPs listed.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has this afternoon revealed the final shortlist of potential winners for their annual Internet Hero and Internet Villain gongs at the forthcoming 2014 Internet industry awards. You can probably guess who’s on this year’s Villains list.

The National Customer Satisfaction Index – United Kingdom (NCSI-UK), which is based on interviews with more than 6,799 customers during Q2-2014, has revealed that satisfaction with the country’s biggest four broadband Internet Service Providers is up 3% to an NCSI score of 69 out of 100. Overall Virgin Media came top and BT was bottom.

RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

The average fixed line home broadband download speed for the largest eight ISPs in the United Kingdom held stable at 21.7Mbps (up from 21.32Mbps in April 2014) and Internet uploads were similarly unchanged at 5.04Mbps. As usual Virgin Media and BT remain the fastest national providers. A new chart that tracks the monthly changes has also been added.

A new RootMetrics study finds that mobile operator EE has beaten Vodafone, O2 and Three UK to be crowned the fastest and most reliable Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) provider for the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester in England during the first half of 2014.

A new report from uSwitch, which is based on 1,896,977 consumer Internet speedtests conducted during the August 2013 to January 2014 period, claims to have revealed the slowest and fastest streets in the United Kingdom for broadband speed. But we wouldn’t rely on the results.

Cable operator Virgin Media often wins awards for being the fastest national consumer broadband provider, at least in terms of average download speed, but this overlooks the contribution of considerably faster services from smaller ISPs that are frequently shunned. We take a closer look at the real-world performance of these providers.

The telecoms regulator has today published its latest biannual report into the real-world Internet speeds of fixed line broadband ISP consumers across the United Kingdom, which reveals that the average download rate has risen to 17.8Mbps (up by +17.41% from 14.7Mbps in August 2013). Sadly a huge gap still exists between urban and rural areas.

The average home broadband ISP download speeds for the largest seven Internet access providers in the United Kingdom managed to reach 20.94Mbps in March 2014, while uploads hit 4.79Mbps. As usual BT and Virgin Media continued to hold the top spots for downstream performance.

BT and EE’s home broadband packages generated the highest level of customer gripes during the final quarter of 2013. The data, which comes from Ofcom’s quarterly consumer complaints report, also revealed that TalkTalk were the worst for fixed phone providers, while Orange UK came bottom for mobile and BT also failed at Pay TV.

Consumer magazine Which? has today praised smaller broadband and phone providers for their quality, called for all ISPs to offer a Broadband Speed Guarantee to customers and awarded its coveted Recommended Provider gong to The Utility Warehouse and John Lewis in their latest consumer satisfaction survey. Zen Internet and PlusNet also won ‘Recommended’ status under the broadband-only section.

RootMetrics has today published their H2 2013 Rootscore Report, which uses data collected from 840,000 network and speed tests conducted across the United Kingdom to reveal which mobile operator is best for Internet access, calls and texting. Suffice to say that EE topped the table in all respects, while Vodafone was almost always at the bottom.

The latest ISP Speed Index update for Netflix‘s unlimited Internet movie and TV video streaming service has revealed that BT is now at the top of the table with an average speed of 2.85Mbps (Megabits per second), although they’re only very marginally ahead of Virgin Media.
