Openreach Update on Progress of Project Gigabit Builds in Scotland

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has issued a progress update on their deployment of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across rural parts of Scotland. This forms part of their £157m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit contract (here) with the UK government to upgrade 65,000 premises (albeit managed by the Scottish Government).

Ofcom Consult on Impact of Openreach PIA on the UK Leased Line Market UPDATE

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today opened a “narrow consultation” that proposes to amend their leased line access (LLA) market analysis for the ongoing Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR) to reflect a “greater potential impact” from Openreach’s Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product (this allows rivals to run new fibre via existing cable ducts and poles).

It could also cut civil engineer costs and reduce disruption.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has informed UK broadband ISPs that they will be “temporarily withdrawing” the provision of their Multiport Optical Network Terminal (ONT) device and the related Box Swap service (i.e. replacing an existing / older ONT with a new Multiport ONT). The move is due to some “technical issues experienced” by providers.

Broadband and mobile operator Vodafone and Three UK (VodafoneThree) have published their latest Q2 FY26 financial results. The figures show that they now have 1.704 million fixed broadband customers (up by 50k in Q2 vs +44k in Q1) and a huge combined mobile base of 28.824m (up from 28.765m).

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, has today called on incumbent network operator Openreach (BT) to clarify which homes it’s likely to sacrifice if they carry out their threat to scale-back the deployment of full fibre (FTTP) broadband. BT See Openreach UK Broadband Lines Fall by 242k as FTTP Covers 20.3M Premises

The BT Group has today published their H1 FY26 biannual results to Sept 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage to total 20.3m (level with H2 FY25 growth); including 5.5m in rural areas. But broadband line losses to rivals jumped to 242k in the last quarter (up from 169k).

The CEO of network access provider Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, has warned Ofcom and the UK Government that he is “going to hold fire” on seeking approval for the final phase of the operator’s plan to deploy full fibre (FTTP) based broadband ISP technology to 30 million premises. At least until the regulator and tax environment show themselves to be favourable.

R100 Gigabit Broadband Rollout Reaches 93,800 Premises in Scotland

The Scottish Government (SG) recently revealed that 93,800 premises have now benefitted from their £697m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (up from 83,419 in July 2025), which is rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband to remote rural areas. But the full roll-out is still not expected to complete until early 2028.

ISP BT has published the biannual (October 2025) progress update on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat unpopular 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,553 premises (up from 8,411 in April 2025), with 186 further builds in-progress (down from 349).
