BT Wholesale Enhances UK Connectivity via New Data Centre PoPs

BTWholesale’s plan to boost its fibre optic based Ethernet footprint and big business connectivity, which started earlier this year, has now seen several new data centre PoP (Point of Presence) sites go live at TelecityGroup in Joule House (Manchester), Equinix [LDN5] in Slough and a further one in Leeds. More are set to follow.

BT Openreach Recruit 500 Extra UK Telecoms Engineers to Improve Service

BTOpenreach has announced its intention to recruit another 500 full-time broadband and telephone engineers, mostly in London, Surrey (England), Aberdeen (Scotland) and more generally around Wales. The move forms part of BT’s on-going efforts to meet Ofcom’s new quality of service requirements (faster fault fixing and installations etc.).

Digital Scotland Confirm Next 67 Locations for Fibre Broadband Upgrades

The Digital Scotland project has today announced the next 67 locations (80,000 homes and businesses), including 15 new communities in the Highlands and Islands region, that will benefit from the £410m scheme which aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to 85% of premises in Scotland by the end of 2015 and rising to 95% by the end of 2017.

One of BT’s off-duty business improvement coaches, Martin Jones, claims to have spotted an Openreach Street Cabinet in the Gloucester city centre area that has apparently been painted by the well-known graffiti artist, Banksy, whose work can often sell for a small fortune. Uh oh.

A recently updated specification document for BT’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service (SIN 498) has included mention of a new Street Cabinet based ADSL2+ broadband service, which would be “used to provide extended reach beyond what is possible with VDSL2“.

The outspoken boss of broadband provider AAISP (Andrews and Arnold), Adrian Kennard, has criticised BTOpenreach for making a “very very detrimental change” to the terms of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service. In particular Openreach intends to stop supporting the VDSL modem they provide, which the ISP fears could make it harder and more costly to get faults fixed.

Sky Seeks Code Powers to Support New UK PIA and SLU Broadband Trials

Ofcom has proposed to grant Code Powers to BSkyB Ltd. (Sky Broadband) in order to both make it easier for them to maintain and develop their core fibre optic network (e.g. quicker approval for street works) and to support trials of new solutions, such as a Passive Infrastructure Access (PIA) and Sub-Loop Unbundling (SLU) related broadband services.

BT Says Sorry for Lengthy Isle of Bute Broadband Provision Delays

Several Rothesay locals, which is a small but principal town of around 5,000 people on the Isle of Bute (West Scotland), have complained after BT advised that it would not be possible to connect their new premises to broadband until November 2014 due to capacity problems at the nearby telephone exchange (the normal wait is usually around 2 weeks).
