Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Fibrus, which is rolling out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across both Northern Ireland and the North of England (Scotland will follow), has issued a progress update that reveals they’ve now covered around 250,000 premises and have 36,000 customers (take-up of c.15%).

Openreach (BT) has announced that they’re extending their “Connect the Unconnected” special offer, which makes it possible for UK ISPs to waive FTTC (VDSL2) broadband connection fees for any customers who receive “Universal Credit” with no other earnings, and who aren’t currently connected to its network.

The current CEO of broadband and telecoms giant BT Group (inc. Openreach, Plusnet and EE), Philip Jansen (56), could be on his way out – sooner than expected. Industry sources have reportedly told a Sunday newspaper that BT Group have already begun hunting for somebody to replace Jansen, who has held the position since 2018.

The Ferns Group, which is a Kent-based civil engineering firm that specialises in reinstatement works, has become the latest such company to sign a major £50m+ network services agreement with Openreach (there are actually several contracts involved). The deal mostly covers the South of England and may lead to bigger things.

UK ISP BT and the West London Alliance (WLA), which represents the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Harrow and Hillingdon, have today announced a new £3.9 million partnership that aims to provide up to 15,000 “homes, schools and businesses with access to ultra-fast broadband” using full fibre technology.

Neos Networks has announced that their ongoing project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (councils, hospitals etc.) across Oxfordshire (England), many of which are in rural areas, is “on track” to complete by the end of 2023 – some 90 sites have already been reached.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has officially confirmed that their £15bn rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP technology has today reached the milestone of 10 million premises passed (up from 9.57m in Dec 2022). Some 3 million customers have also been connected (up from 2.73 million).

Selected customers of UK ISP EE and BT’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages are being invited to take part in a new “Faster Broadband Speeds Trial“, which we suspect will involve the use of Openreach’s new 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps tiers (both offer 120Mbps upstream).

Ofcom has this morning announced that they will need “an additional two months” to undertake further analysis of Openreach’s “Equinox 2” discount scheme, which will delay the operator’s planned 1st April 2023 launch of cheaper wholesale prices on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP products.

A new UK broadband ISP appears to have launched this month called Rebel Internet, which is run by two former BT executives – CEO Tucker George and COO David Groth – and aims to do things differently from others by pledging “no contracts“, “fair pricing” and a “customers first” approach with “Wi-Fi that actually works“.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers over 800,000 premises across Scotland, which has been achieved via an investment of just £240 million (reflecting their “average UK build cost” of £300 per premises passed).

Broadband ISP BT has today confirmed that they will restart the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product from April 2023, which will start gradually with a series of expanded pilot schemes that will be made up of “lower usage landline customers” who already have full fibre broadband.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association, which represents UK alternative broadband ISP networks, has today warned Ofcom that “more than £25bn worth of investment” to improve the UK’s digital infrastructure “will be directly threatened” if Openreach is allowed to introduce new FTTP wholesale price discounts (Equinox 2).

The Welsh Government (WG) has published a Q4 2022 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which reveals that a total of 35,770 extra premises (up from 34,122 in Q3) have now gained access to their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

The Local Government Association, which represents councils across England and Wales, has warned that traffic lights, cash machines and vital telecare equipment used by almost 2 million vulnerable people may “cease to operate” when analogue copper phone services are withdrawn in 2025 – unless more support is provided.

Good news. UK ISP Sky Broadband has finally returned to selling their top tier 900Mbps (90Mbps upload) “Gigafast” package – based off Openreach’s national FTTP network – to new customers, apparently after carrying out unspecified work to “upgrade and optimise” the service. The package was removed from sale last November 2022.
