Fern Trading-backed UK ISP Giganet (Cuckoo) appears to have been suffering from a “mass service outage” over the past 12-24 hours which, judging by feedback from customers across the UK, has resulted in a variety of sporadic connectivity problems since around 3pm yesterday afternoon.

Belfast-based UK broadband ISP Fibrus, which is currently deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Northern Ireland and England, has today revealed that they’ve begun the next phase of their rollout in the North of England – targeting 125,000 premises across 40 locations.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has introduced a special “Equinox Waiver” for smaller broadband ISPs. The change means they will be entitled to Equinox connection and rental discounts on the operator’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products, but without needing to meet the Fibre Only Target or Fibre Only Threshold.

Openreach (BT) has today issued another update to their £15bn UK rollout of a new multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which adds 10 new locations to their deployment plan – covering an additional 124,000 homes and businesses in places across England, Wales and Scotland.

UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (April 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 7,000 premises (up from 5,900 in Oct 2022), with 800 further builds in progress (down from 2,000).

Sometimes the UK rollout of a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in an area can be a bit of a roller coaster, which is something we’ve touched on a few times before (example). But today it’s the turn of Openreach, which recently seemed to suffer an almost comical level of difficult with deciding whether or not they’re even building.

Internet service provider iTalk has recently become the latest broadband ISP to raise prices across their range of ADSL, FTTC and FTTP based internet and phone packages for consumers, which are all powered via Openreach’s national network. The change applies to their standard monthly prices and doesn’t impact existing first-term discounts.

Good news. Openreach has quietly re-opened their Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged communities (e.g. rural villages) around England, Wales and Scotland to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks.

The FTTH Council Europe‘s annual conference in Vienna (Austria) has today announced the winners of their 2023 awards, which among other things saw national UK network operator Openreach being named as the winner of their ‘FTTH Operator Award‘.

Cable breaks and damage happen all the time on UK broadband networks the size of Openreach’s, and they’re usually caused by accidents, such as third-party contractors ramming their diggers into the wrong patch of ground. But only very rarely do we see damage as bad as the one caused by a landslip in Kent this week.

Consumers looking to change broadband providers in the UK will be unhappy to learn that the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed a delay to the introduction of their faster and more extensive One Touch Switch (OTS) migration system – possibly by 6 months or more – because ISPs are not yet ready to support it.
