In most cases, the UK roll-out and activation of a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network into a new area is a process that can take anything from a few months and up to 1-2 years. But spare a thought for those who get stuck with part-complete builds, such as in one Lancashire community, where it may take 6 years to finish.

The CEO and Vice Chairman of Liberty Global (VMO2), Mike Fries, has told an investor meeting that Openreach’s recently announced FTTP broadband price cuts for UK ISPs (Equinox 2) are a “desperate and premature” move by BT, which he sees as an “overreaction to the market more broadly.”

BT Group’s Chief Financial Officer, Simon Lowth, has today called on the UK government – ahead of next month’s 2023 UK Budget – to consider the introduction of “a much more competitive system of capital allowances” in order to help operators roll-out new gigabit-capable broadband and 5G mobile networks.

A growing number of ISPs have introduced cheaper Social Tariffs over the past year – aimed at those on benefits who are most exposed to the UK’s cost-of-living crisis. As part of this, some providers have called on Openreach to launch social tariff products at wholesale to support them, but there’s so far no indication of that happening.

The Scottish Government has released a small update on the progress of their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT). This confirms that a total of 16,600 rural properties have so far been covered by a fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP network under the scheme (inc. 2,800 connections via R100 vouchers).

Ofcom has today opened an expected consultation into Openreach’s ‘Equinox 2‘ discount scheme, which will further reduce the wholesale prices of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband products for ISPs and thus consumers. But their “provisional” view is “not intervene“, which is likely to anger alternative networks (AltNets).

Openreach recently began a new Shallow Build Trial in Great Britain (excluding N.Ireland) for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which we think could make it possible for the operator to expand their network into areas that might normally be too challenging due to high deployment costs and risk.

Openreach has announced that, as part of their plan to retire older analogue UK phone services by December 2025, they will conduct a trial that “responsibly [adjusts] the performance of the remaining analogue services” (i.e. blocking out-bound calls and limiting broadband ISP speeds) to “encourage” customers to upgrade.
