We all know how annoying even a brief loss of home broadband connectivity can be, particularly during the current COVID-19 crisis, but spare a thought for poor Joseph Chesney who lives in a rural area just outside of Endon (Staffordshire Moorlands), he’s been waiting almost 3 months for Openreach to fix a broken fibre optic line.

At present if you order a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP line on Openreach’s UK network then you’re likely to end up with a single port Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed on your inside wall (example), but a new 4 port ONT is coming this summer 2021 and we’ve been given a sneak peak.

The latest independent study of UK broadband coverage for H2 2020 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 19.2% of premises (up from 14.8% in H1), while 37.4% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 22.1%) and 64.3% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 61.7%).

A competitive tender process has resulted in Openreach choosing the monitoring and analytics firm EXFO to supply optical test heads and test access switching, as well as monitoring, to help support the rollout of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the UK.

A touch of deja vu is in the air this morning after sources informed us that Openreach (BT) are now notifying UK ISPs that, due to the latest national COVID-19 lockdown measures, many new installs for their ultrafast broadband and some other products will have to be delayed to 1st March 2021 onwards.

Openreach has announced a new ‘Proof of Concept‘ (PoC) to test a change to the current Network Adjustment process in their Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product, which could help alternative UK network ISPs to more efficiently rollout new FTTP broadband networks via Duct Overlay.

Openreach (BT) has revealed that broadband usage across their network of UK ISPs “more than doubled” in 2020 to reach an annual total of 50,000 PetaBytes (PB), which is up from 22,000PB last year. Overall, the average property connected to their “fibre” networks used around 3000 GigaBytes (GB) of data (c.9GB per day).

Openreach (BT) has today announced the completion of their second and final contract phase under the state aid supported Connecting Cumbria (CC) project, which has now made “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP services available to nearly 95% of premises in the county (i.e. 127,000 extra homes and businesses).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset team will be hoping that the third time is a charm after they awarded £80m worth of contracts for Phase 2 of their delayed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) rollout project, which sees 6 LOTS being split between three suppliers (Airband, Truespeed and Wessex Internet).

Openreach (BT) has given UK broadband ISPs that make use of their “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products a little Christmas gift by discounting the cost of their 10Gbps Cablelink services, which help to provide the capacity for such full fibre connections.

A new project between the Angus Council, SmartRural and UK ISP Rapier Systems in Scotland looks set to help bring “high speed broadband” connectivity to some of the county’s remotest rural residences and businesses via a new gigabit-capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.

The new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG), which is led by paid consumer magazine Which? and various others (FSB, CBI, Ofcom etc.), has today published their first report that identifies a number of areas where improvements could be made to boost the take-up of 1Gbps capable broadband services in the UK.

Openreach (BT), which plans to invest £12bn to extend their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to 20 million UK premises by the mid to late 2020s (2025 – 2030), has confirmed that they will create another 5,300 engineering jobs during 2021. Plus they’ll convert their entire fleet to EVs by 2030.

Ofcom has published their annual Connection Nations infrastructure report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks now cover 18% of UK premises (up from 10% last year) and 27% are within reach of a “gigabit” (1Gbps+) service (7.9 million). Meanwhile geographic 4G cover is given as a range from 79% to 85%.

After an extended period of negotiation TalkTalk, the budget broadband and phone provider that is currently home to around 4.2 million UK customers, has today officially recommend a £1.1bn takeover proposal from Toscafund, which including debt values the company at around £1.8bn.

Broadband services to hundreds of premises on Westray, which is one of the Orkney Islands in Scotland and is home to a population of around 600 people, have been disrupted after one of BT’s subsea fibre optic cables was damaged. Phone and mobile services are continuing to function (this traffic can be routed via other methods).

After a long delay the Scottish Government (SG) and BT (Openreach) have finally signed a rollout contract for LOT 1 (North Scotland and the Highlands) of the £579 million Reaching 100% (R100) project, which will see “superfast broadband” speeds of 30Mbps+ reaching many more rural premises (mostly via gigabit FTTP).
