Last month was unusual for a number of reasons, not least of which was the fact that – in the space of just six days (16th to 21st of February) – the UK experienced three named storms (Dudley, Eunice and Franklin). As a result, over 650 of Openreach’s broadband and phone carrying poles were “badly damaged and need replacing“.

The UK state aid supported Superfast West Yorkshire and York (SFWYY) programme and Openreach (BT) have announced the completion of their Phase 2 deployment contract, which has spent the past few years working to extend the local availability of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services (including a fair bit of full fibre).

Openreach’s (BT) Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged UK areas to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, has been put on hold for new applications in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) due to “soaring demand“.

Rural UK ISP Wildanet, which last year began the £50m rollout of a new gigabit-capable broadband (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) network in Cornwall (here), has today confirmed that they “have no plans to put our prices up” like many of the market’s largest providers (most of those recently hit consumers with huge price hikes).

Broadband ISP Ogi has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve just managed to unbundle and backhaul their 20th handover exchange in South Wales, which gives them more control to offer cost-effective Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages on Openreach’s UK network (i.e. in areas where they aren’t building their own fibre.. yet).

The previous offer of a £20K reward to help catch those responsible for a string of copper cable thefts in rural Cambridgeshire (England) has not been effective, yet. Openreach’s (BT) network in the county has again been hit by the crime, which saw 3.4km of underground cable stolen and broadband disrupted for 3,000 properties.

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) broadband rollout programme has today issued an update on their £6m Fibre Extension Programme (FEP) contract with Openreach, which was originally due to complete by the end of 2021 but is still ongoing and has been extended to cover a further 100 homes.

The Wiltshire Council (WC) in England has apologised to residents of around 100 homes in the rural villages of Ablington and Figheldean after their contractors accidentally cut one of Openreach’s (BT) core broadband and phone cables, which has left locals disconnected for much of the past week.

Storm Eunice struck the UK today, bringing with it winds gusting up to 80-90mph across large parts of South England and Wales, as well as rain, high seas and – in some parts of Scotland – heavy snowfall. The event has unsurprisingly also caused damage to telecoms (broadband and mobile) infrastructure, resulting in outages.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has launched a new “speed test trial” for UK ISPs on their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which aims to make it easier for providers to identify the cause of speed issues by ruling out as many other potential variables as possible.

Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they will create 4,000 new jobs during 2022 – including around 3,000 apprenticeships – to help support their ongoing deployment of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which aims to reach 25 million premises by December 2026.

The BT Group has this morning outlined new plans to outsource their supply chain operation to logistics firm GXO Logistics, including supporting the Group’s fixed broadband and mobile network build activities by transporting stock and replenishing supply stores, helping to keep 15 million customers connected.

Openreach (BT) has warned of further provisioning delays for UK customers taking their high-capacity data services, specifically their Ethernet Backhaul Direct (EBD) products, which is occurring after the ongoing global shortage of semiconductor chips (here) hit their supply of kit from Ciena.

The BT Group has published their Q3 2021/22 results, which saw Openreach expand the coverage of gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 6.44 million UK premises (up by +662K vs +615K in Q2) and BT enter into “exclusive discussions” with Discovery to create a 50:50 joint venture with BTSport and Eurosport UK.

The government will today publish their “flagship” Levelling Up White Paper, which sets out their “plan to transform the UK by spreading opportunity and prosperity to all parts of it” and also confirms their revised broadband target – that “by 2030, the UK will have nationwide gigabit-capable broadband.”

UK ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has today published their latest results (financial Q3 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +29k customers (vs +22k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 991,000, which should see them pass the magic million mark before their next update.
