The Lincolnshire Police are appealing for witnesses after criminals ripped up 1,000 metres worth of Openreach’s (BT) copper broadband and phone cable from Mareham Lane in Scredington, south of Sleaford. As a result, local homes and businesses in the village are said to have been left cut-off for days.

Mobile operator and fixed line ISP Vodafone UK has today further reduced the already discounted prices of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered home broadband packages for new customers, which are available on both Openreach and CityFibre’s respective national full fibre networks. The slower FTTC plans have also been cut.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has announced that they intend to recruit over 600 apprentices and graduates this year (up from 428 last year), which forms part of their September 2022 intake. This will reflect roles spanning areas such as engineering (5G and FTTP etc.), UK customer service, research and cyber-security.

A recent report from banking giant Credit Suisse has estimated that Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks will cover 90% of the UK by 2025. The country was also found to be the “most attractive market” for incremental investment in such networks, thanks to “strong build momentum and interest” in faster broadband.

Openreach (BT) has this morning published the first update of 2022 to the £15bn rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which adds 113 new locations (towns and villages) to their coverage plan. The operator aims to reach 25 million premises (80% of the UK) by December 2026.

Openreach made a somewhat comical gaffe this week after they told an end-user, who lives in a copper “stop sell” area and was trying to order a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service, that the best way to resolve a problem with getting his UK address recognised was to “place an order for a telephone service only“.

The First Minister of the Scottish Government, Nicola Sturgeon, has issued a short update on the LOT 1 (North Scotland and Highlands) contract with BT (Openreach) under their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which is extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage across rural parts of Scotland (mostly via FTTP).

A string of damaging copper cable thefts in rural Cambridgeshire (England), which repeatedly knocked out broadband and phone services for hundreds of homes on Openreach’s (BT) network in the villages of Swavesey and Witchford, have resulted in the operator offering a reward of £20,000 to help catch those responsible.

Internet provider Plusnet has this week confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they will finally launch a new range of packages, which will be based off Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered broadband technology, at some point “later this year.” But it’s not the first time the UK ISP has promised to launch such products.

A number of residents in the small rural North Wales hamlet community of The Nant (Y Nant in Welsh), which is in Holywell, have vented anger at Openreach (BT) after their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network was left disconnected for 8 weeks following Storm Arwen on 26th November 2021.

Openreach (BT) has released the Tranche 7 batch of 98 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” network (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

New customers of UK ISP and mobile operator EE, specifically those taking out one of their top two Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Fibre Max” (500Mbps to 900Mbps) broadband plans, may be pleased to learn that they can now receive up to 12 months’ Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, as well as unlimited mobile gaming data.

Some homes in the remote rural hamlet of Cartel Fell, which sits in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria (England), have been left without access to a working fixed line broadband ISP or phone service for six long weeks. The problems began after Openreach’s local telecoms infrastructure was significantly damaged by Storm Arwen.

Broadband and phone services have been disrupted for a second time in the Witchford area of Cambridgeshire (England) after thieves caused “significant damage” by cutting through one of Openreach’s secure boxes. But it’s unclear what, if anything, was actually stolen as a result of this attack.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H2 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 30.23% of premises (up from 24.33% in H1 2021), while 65.27% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 41.72%) and 67.63% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 66.9%).

Openreach (BT) has kindly provided ISPreview.co.uk with some new network traffic data, which shows the average monthly UK data consumption of broadband users across their network for the past 13-months – from September 2020 to October 2021. Interestingly, traffic actually declined through the spring and summer.

The Shropshire County Council (SCC) in England has this week allocated another £1 million (total so far of £2m) to help boost the value of the Government’s local rural gigabit broadband vouchers, which now offers grants worth up to £4,000 (homes) or £7,000 (small businesses) to cover the costs of installing such a network.
