Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has enhanced the existing discount on some of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages (specifically the 500Mbps and 900Mbps plans) by adding a £50 bill credit for new customers. The new offer is expected to run until 3rd July 2022.

Credible sources have informed ISPreview that UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast, Sky TV) are about to launch a new 900Mbps “Gigafast” package for homes, which will continue to be based off Openreach’s 1000Mbps (115Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product tier and should cost £55 per month.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents around 40,000 staff at the UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT (inc. Openreach and EE), has rejected a new pay offer from the operator – described as a flat rate of £1,200 – as “insulting” given the “rising inflation and squeeze on household incomes.”

Broadband ISP BT has paused the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) style Digital Voice product after complaints due to recent service outages. The service is designed to replace their old analogue phone service and is typically offered alongside broadband packages.

Network provider Openreach, which as part of their deal with Ofcom (legal separation from BT) is required to maintain an independent governance structure, has today announced the appointment of Natalie Ceeney as a non-executive member to its Board. Natalie replaces Liz Benison, who will step down on 30th April 2022.

Last year we reported that UK ISP Zen Internet was preparing to make their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband packages on CityFibre’s new network available nationwide (here). A new deal has now been signed that sees Zen making an exclusive long-term volume commitment across CF’s entire network plan.

We recently reported that UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) had nearly completed a major upgrade of their network (here), which would enable them to launch faster Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages (Openreach’s platform). The good news is these are now live, a little earlier than expected.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative full fibre and fixed wireless broadband ISP networks, has warned that Openreach’s (BT) plan to close 4,600 exchanges creates a huge and costly problem for many of their rivals in the alternative network space.

Some of Vodafone’s potential UK broadband ISP customers, specifically those trying to order one of their Openreach powered Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plans, have run into an unusual problem that limits their choice of package to a top speed of 200Mbps (instead of 900Mbps+). But don’t worry, it’s only a temporary measure.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced a new 6-month special offer to support UK trials of “accelerated migrations” for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband service, which is focused on making it quicker for ISPs to move existing customers from copper to full fibre lines.

A new report from Audit Scotland has provided somewhat of a summary and progress update on the Scottish Government’s £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with BT (Openreach), which is busy extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage across rural parts of the country (mostly via FTTP).

Rural focused UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network will be extended to cover the small town of Shipston-on-Stour (population of 5,000) in Warwickshire, which comes just two days after rival network operator FullFibre Limited made a similar announcement (here).

Openreach’s (BT) Director of Corporate Affairs, Catherine Colloms, has told a UK committee for the new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI) that the proposed law doesn’t do enough to help them bring gigabit broadband ISP network upgrades to large residential buildings (MDUs) and telegraph poles.

Ofcom has today set out their final changes to the rules that govern the use of phone numbers in the UK, which has opted to retain the existing rules on geographic numbering and remove the obligation on telecoms providers and broadband ISPs to provide local dialling to customers.

The Welsh Government has provided a Q4 2021 progress update on their £52.5 million Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 25,855 premises (up from 24,515 in Q3) have now gained access to the operator’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

Some 154 rural public sector sites, as well as 650 homes and businesses, across the Angus, Perth & Kinross areas of Scotland are able to benefit from gigabit-capable broadband speeds after BT (Openreach) “completed” infrastructure work on a new “full fibre” network, which was partly funded by the UK Government.
