Telecoms giant BT migrated 300,000 UK business customers away from legacy phone lines and on to digital broadband and phone solutions in 2024. But the provider claims that 22% of small businesses still see themselves as “analogue“, relying on tools like traditional landlines, paper contracts and fax machines, which must change before the old service is switched-off.

Multiple Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews were called in late yesterday morning to tackle a blaze at the first floor of an office block on BT’s research and development focused Adastral Park site near Ipswich. The business park is home to around 150 other ICT companies that contribute toward both BT and their own development.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has confirmed that they will kick off their project to close around 4,600 of their legacy exchanges from 1st April 2025, starting with the introduction of a “stop sell” on new service provisions for an initial batch of 105 sites (due to complete by around 2030/31). This will impact various broadband, PIA and Ethernet services from ISPs.

Several broadband and mobile operators, including Vodafone, BT, EE, and Plusnet, have this week notified of a small but useful tweak to their mid-contract price hikes policy, which means that new customers who sign-up will not be hit by the price increase that was previously due to start around the end of March 2025.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just revealed how much they’ll charge ISPs for their new symmetric 1Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband package, which is due to launch on 1st April 2025 and will initially only be available to locations being covered as part of their rural Project Gigabit contracts (here).

Most of the major broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom (BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, EE and Plusnet) have just been handed a new court order to block an Israel TV video streaming site, which was found to have been facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

But the study also highlights the performance impact of EE’s (BT) new Wi-Fi 7 capable routers in the UK.

Network technology firm Adtran has revealed that their Software-Defined (SD), open and disaggregated SDX Optical Line Terminal (OLT) platform now powers 8.6 million UK premises passed on Openreach’s (BT) new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, managed by Mosaic CP. This is said to reflect about 30% of their national full fibre network.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has come top in a new network benchmarking study of 4G and 5G (broadband and calls) performance across London, which was conducted by the Berlin-based NET CHECK organisation and saw them score the highest number of ranking points (932.83 out of a possible 1,000 points).

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today previewed a new study, which examined the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks from EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK across London. Sadly the results, which also tested 14 other major European cities, put the UK’s capital at the very bottom of the table.

Telecoms giant BT has revealed that they’ve now deployed their Global Fabric Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) platform to “over” 30 Equinix data-centres across the UK and world, which will grow to over 40 in the next year – spanning the world’s top 30 business locations and covering 95% of the world’s cloud interconnection traffic.

Ofcom have today published their Q3 2024 study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which names and shames TalkTalk for attracting the most complaints about broadband, while O2 took the most flak mobile and Virgin Media was put on the naughty step for Pay TV.

The UK government has published its revised Telecare National Action Plan (TNAP), which will require major UK broadband and phone providers (e.g. BT, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky Broadband) to go further with protecting vulnerable telecare users when upgrading legacy phone lines to new digital (IP based) networks.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has rejected an appeal against its earlier dismissal of a £1.3bn class action claim against BT by the Collective Action on Land Lines (CALL) campaign, which had accused the national broadband ISP and phone provider of overcharging 2.3 million of its landline-only phone customers between 2015 and 2018.
