Openreach 20 million full fibre premises milestone PR 240925

National network operator Openreach (BT) has this morning confirmed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers broadband speeds of up to 1,800Mbps to homes via hundreds of UK ISPs, has now covered 20 million premises (up from 18.3m on 1st May 2025) and take-up has risen to around 38%.

Openreach (BT), which is currently in the process of converting the “majority” of their commercial UK vehicle fleet (i.e. 23,000 vans and cars) to Electric Vehicles by the end of March 2031, has announced a new deal that will see myenergi supply thousands of smart ‘zappi’ EV chargers to its engineers – giving them a simple way to charge vehicles at home overnight.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced the official launch of their new telecare migration services across the UK. The service is designed to help UK consumers with old analogue based phone (PSTN / WLR) and medical telecare systems to safely migrate to modern broadband-based (FTTP etc.) connections with digital phone (IP-based) services.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed that broadband data traffic across their UK full fibre (FTTP) network alone increased by more than 35% between Jan and June 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. The busiest day so far was on 21st Feb, when a large Fortnite (video game) patch saw users gobble a total of 372PB (PetaBytes).

A new study from SignalTracker, which runs a popular Android mobile app (not iOS) for monitoring and examining mobile network performance, has revealed the results of a study into the speed differences between the UK’s primary mobile operators (MNO) and their virtual operator (MVNO) siblings. Unsurprisingly, EE, Vodafone, Three UK and O2 outperformed mvnos.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT Group has this morning announced that Bharti Mittal, the Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, and Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Airtel Limited, will both join the company’s Board as non-independent non-executive directors.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual 2025 monitoring report into Openreach’s independence from BT, which found only a “low number of breaches of compliance” and noted that, overall, “compliance appears to be well-established and well-embedded“.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed to broadband ISPs that they will begin the next phase of their UK exchange closure programme in Q3 2025/26 (i.e. roughly this time next year), which will impact a further 12 exchanges. This follows their initial closure pilot with 3 exchanges (Deddington, Ballyclare and Kenton Road), which has nearly completed.

The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in England has confirmed that it will be able to commit an additional £2m (£0.556m in 2025-26 and £1.444m in 2026-27) to support broadband top-up vouchers (total budget of £3.5m). The aim is to help people in remote rural areas to get a gigabit speed internet connection installed. But there’s a catch.

The Preston City Council in Lancashire has approved BT’s proposed deployment of a new WiFi Street Hub on Church Street. The move comes shortly after the same local authority rejected a similar proposal to deploy the smart kiosks on both Friargate North and New Hall Lane (here), where they were deemed to be at risk of “increasing street clutter”.

Just a reminder that the UK government will conduct another major nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts service at 3pm tomorrow (Sunday 7th September 2025), which will be sent out via mobile networks to supporting handsets. This is otherwise normally only intended to be used if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (severe flooding, fires and extreme weather etc.).

Openreach (BT) has warned broadband and phone providers impacted by three of their pilot UK exchange closures – Deddington, Ballyclare and Kenton Road – that they only have c.90 days left to identify their risk cohorts (e.g. telecare customers) and migrate them. The network operator said they were growing “increasingly concerned” about the pressure on their resources from ISPs leaving it too late.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has today announced a new partnership with edge video delivery network MainStreaming, which they hope will deliver a smoother and “more resilient streaming experience” for UK audiences by integrating it directly into their nationwide mobile and fixed networks.

Telecoms giant BT has today announced that their Radianz unit, which is a global network and connectivity platform for the financial services industry that generated revenues of approx. £142m during 2024/25, is to be sold to Transaction Network Services (TNS) – a provider of ultra-low latency trading infrastructure – for an undisclosed sum.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave has today revealed that they’ve worked with UK mobile operator EE (BT) to deploy a further 50 new Small Cell based outdoor 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) units across the City of London area, which are helping to expand the network operator’s coverage and performance.

The Speed Fibre Group, which is an open access fibre infrastructure provider (managing or owning 5,400km of fibre) that is ultimately backed by Cordiant Capital, has today announced that they’ve completed the previously announced (here) acquisition of BT’s Irish wholesale fibre and enterprise business unit (BT Communications Ireland Ltd.).

The Government has modified the Single Supplier Framework agreement that they awarded to Openreach (BT) last year under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme (here). The deal was originally valued at “up to” £800m and designed to help upgrade 312,000 premises in some of the hardest to reach UK areas to FTTP. But this has just been boosted in value to £1.2bn.
