The Government has modified the Single Supplier Framework agreement that they awarded to Openreach (BT) last year under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme (here). The deal was originally valued at “up to” £800m and designed to help upgrade 312,000 premises in some of the hardest to reach UK areas to FTTP. But this has just been boosted in value to £1.2bn.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has suffered another setback in its 10-year project, which aimed to convert a further 2,000 of their legacy payphones and kiosks – across more than 200 UK towns and cities – into smart Street Hubs (here). Preston Council rejected a couple of proposed deployments over concerns about rising “street clutter“.

Some customers of mobile and broadband ISP EE (BT), specifically those on their top 1.6Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) package via Openreach’s UK network, appear to be experiencing some repeated connectivity problems with the provider’s latest Wi-Fi 7 capable Smart Hub Pro router (slower packages get the different Smart Hub Plus device).

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published their H1 2025 study of UK mobile networks (calls, texts etc.) and 4G/5G mobile broadband speeds. The results once again name EE as the best mobile provider after they scooped up the highest scores and fastest data speeds across most categories.

The Technical Director for rural connectivity provider Wavemobile, Anthony Timson, has complained that the “biggest issue” they face today is the interaction devices roamed onto their network face with respect to the popular WiFi Calling service. Users who roam on to Wave’s network find that the big mobile operators (EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK) seem to block it.

The latest company accounts for broadband ISP Plusnet, which is part of wider BT Group, has revealed that the company’s turnover fell by -15% to £343m in the year to 31st March 2025 (down from £402m last year) and their employee headcount declined by 133 to total 944.

Mobile network operator and home broadband ISP EE (BT) is reportedly preparing to launch a second Wi-Fi 7 powered router “later this year“, which is intended to complement their existing Smart Hub Pro router (inc. Smart WiFi Pro mesh kit) that is sold alongside their fastest 1.6Gbps FTTP packages on Openreach’s network.

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that their new mobile plans for children under the age of 18 – called “Safer SIMs” – are now available to take, after being soft launched a few weeks ago (here). The plans form part of the operator’s commitment toward “being the UK’s best network for families“.

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. This has helped 201,000 premises in the rural county to access faster broadband over the last 15 years.

Ofcom have today published their latest quarterly (Q1 2025) study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which names TalkTalk as attracting the most negative feedback from customers for fixed broadband, while O2 took the most heat for Mobile and Virgin Media were put on the naughty step for Pay TV services.

A new survey of broadband ISPs by Telegraph readers has handed out awards across several categories to Sky Broadband, EE and Plusnet, with the latter scooping wins across three categories. But neither BT, Vodafone, Virgin Media nor TalkTalk were deemed good enough to win anything, which is despite Virgin technically being the fastest provider.

Good news. Broadband and mobile services on the remote Shetland and Orkney Islands (Scotland), which have been disrupted since part of the main SHEFA-2 (Faroese Telecom) submarine (subsea) fibre optic cable was damaged over a week ago (here), could be restored as soon as this Wednesday or Thursday after the French repair ship ‘Cable Vigilance‘ arrived.

Network operator PlatformX Communications (PXC), which is a trading name of UK provider TalkTalk that sells wholesale solutions to ISPs and other network providers, has recently been causing some frustration among their partners. The problem began after they attempted to set an early date for the withdrawal of SMPF based broadband products (shared unbundled lines).

The London Court of Appeal has refused permission for Justin Le Patourel to appeal against an earlier dismissal (here) of his £1.3bn class action claim against BT via the Collective Action on Land Lines (CALL) campaign. The organisation had accused the broadband and phone provider of overcharging several million of its landline-only phone customers.

The UK Government has this morning revealed that a total of 58 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. The most recent additions have occurred around the North Yorkshire town of Hawes – also impacting Hardraw, Appersett, Snaizeholme and Sedbusk.

The telecoms regulator has today revealed that UK broadband ISP and phone giant BT (inc. EE and Plusnet) have now refunded or credited £18m back to customers. This follows last year’s Ofcom ruling (here), which found that the provider had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.
