Telecoms giant BT Group has today announced the retirement of industry veteran Howard Watson as its Chief Security and Networks Officer (CSNO), which will take effect in March 2026. Greg McCall, the operator’s current Chief Networks Officer (CNO), will be promoted to replace him – effective 1st January 2026.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of BT Group, Simon Lowth, has called on the UK government to “rethink” its proposed changes to UK business rates, which they warn could “risk a slowdown” in digital infrastructure (broadband and mobile) investment and lead to “higher bills” for consumers and businesses.

Beaminster Car Crashed into Openreach Pole

Hundreds of people in the Dorset town of Beaminster have reportedly been left without working broadband and digital phone connectivity for several days after a car crashed into one of Openreach’s telecoms (telegraph) poles in the area and promptly burst into flames. Police are currently still trying to locate the driver, which could suggest a criminal aspect.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has this morning revealed the initial (principal stage) results from their auction of the 26GHz and 40GHz millimetre wave (mmW) spectrum bands for use by 5G mobile (mobile broadband) operators, which saw EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone (VodafoneThree) pay a combined £39m to secure more airwaves.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that the first bidding on their auction of the 26GHz and 40GHz millimetre wave (mmW) spectrum bands for use by 5G mobile (mobile broadband) operators will get underway tomorrow, with BT (EE), O2 (Telefonica UK / Virgin Media) and Vodafone (VodafoneThree) all taking part.

The Deputy CEO of national network access provider Openreach (BT), Katie Milligan, has warned that until “the market really stabilises” then they won’t be able to predict when their current broadband line losses to rivals will stop (Openreach lost 707k in 2024 and expects to lose about 900,000 this financial year).

Openreach (BT) has today published the next (Tranche 22) batch of 94 exchanges in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre lines and will thus stop selling copper based legacy phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has just announced that their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for Mid West Shropshire (Lot 25.01), which was originally held by Voneus until they “mutually agreed to terminate” it at the end of 2024 (here), has now been merged into Openreach’s (BT) existing call-off 3 deployment contract.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that the final bidders due to take part in their auction of the 26GHz and 40GHz millimetre wave (mmW) bands for faster 5G data (mobile broadband) services will include BT (EE), Telefonica UK (O2 / Virgin Media) and Vodafone (VodafoneThree). No surprises this time around.

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks has this morning announced that they’ve so far deployed over 200 5G capable small cells across busy parts of London, which can be harnessed by all the major mobile network operators (i.e. Vodafone / Three UK, O2 and EE) to boost their coverage, local capacity and mobile broadband performance.

Openreach has today notified UK telecoms providers that their SOTAP Analogue product will, following a “successful pilot” (here), get its full commercial launch on 28th October 2025. This is a phone line service that does NOT require broadband to work and will be targeted at vulnerable users who would otherwise struggle with migrating to an All-IP (internet) based phone service.

Network operator Openreach took a few communications providers by surprise yesterday after they gave them just 48 hours to remove any lithium batteries from BT exchanges. The batteries are said to be prohibited by the operator’s building safety policy “due to the significant risks … [of] thermal runaway, fire and explosion“.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ll once again be an official partner for the next Call of Duty video game (Black Ops 7), which is currently scheduled for release on 14th November 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows (PC), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Customers of the service can also expect a few perks, like beta access.

The CEO of BT Group, Allison Kirkby, appears to be gearing up for the government’s annual 2025 Budget announcement by complaining that the operator pays “10 times the amount our peers pay in countries like Germany and the Netherlands” on things like business rates, energy levies and other costs associated with regulation and compliance.

National network operator Openreach (BT) has this morning confirmed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers broadband speeds of up to 1,800Mbps to homes via hundreds of UK ISPs, has now covered 20 million premises (up from 18.3m on 1st May 2025) and take-up has risen to around 38%.
