As another year passes, ISPreview.co.uk has taken a look back over the past 12 months to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs, mobile operators and Starlink (satellite provider). Suffice to say, there’s been a huge performance jump between 2021 and 2022.

A new Freedom-of-Information (FoI) request has revealed that the Scottish Government‘s £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) across rural parts of the country (predominantly via FTTP), is now not expected to reach full completion until March 2028.

Connect and Umlaut have today published their annual UK Mobile Network Test study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 40 towns and along over 10,000km of major roads. Overall, EE managed to come top again.

Broadband provider BT has issued an update on the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was “paused” in May 2022 (here) following complaints about service outages during power cuts etc. But the ISP now says this is “likely” to restart during the “spring of 2023“.

Mobile giant EE (BT) has officially become the first operator to make use of Freshwave‘s deployment of a new small cell based outdoor 4G and 5G mobile network in the central City of London area, which is currently in the pilot phase. O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone are expected to follow.

BT Wholesale – supported by EE and Three UK – is conducting a new “state-of-the-art” 5G (mobile broadband) technology trial in Leeds, where they’re deploying a Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) that in future could be installed as individual street works or fitted in existing street-furniture (e.g. lampposts) to extend the signal.

As expected, the Communications Workers Union (CWU) – representing up to 38,000 of BT and Openreach’s employees – has voted to accept last month’s pay offer (here) from the UK telecoms giant, which will avert any further risk of strike action over Christmas. But the fireworks may begin again next September 2023.

As expected, telecoms giant BT has today confirmed the next phase of their huge re-branding exercise, which in this case will see them combining their Global and Enterprise (inc. Wholesale) units into a single business-to-business unit, called BT Business – led by Bas Burger, the current CEO of BT’s Global unit.

We reported yesterday that Openreach (BT) had announced a range of price cuts for their full fibre broadband lines (here), but as part of the push toward FTTP the operator also hiked prices for copper-line broadband and phone services too (FTTC / SOGEA and G.fast etc.). Such changes will be particularly painful for those with no alternative.

The Welsh Government (WG) has released the Q3 2022 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which reveals that a total of 34,122 extra premises (up from 32,949 in Q2) have now gained access to their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Openreach (BT) has today issued an update to their £15bn rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which “reformats the existing exchange areas already announced” and adds 12 new locations (mostly in London) to their deployment plan – covering an additional 184,806 homes and businesses.

The Leicestershire County Council (LCC) in England has secured £1.55m of public funding from the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit programme in order to help it connect 43 public sectors sites (e.g. schools, council offices etc.) in rural areas to a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband and Ethernet network.

After meeting with ISPs, the Government has today launched a UK-wide public awareness campaign as part of its Help for Households programme, which aims to help people through the cost-of-living crisis and will also work to improve the uptake of cheaper social tariffs from broadband and mobile providers (available to those on benefits).

BT has this afternoon announced plans for a new “UK Cost of Living Pay Rise” to all but the highest paid staff, which it hopes will settle their pay dispute with the Communications Workers Union (CWU) – representing up to 38,000 employees – and thus avert any further strike action over Christmas.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer division, Marc Allera, will this week warn the Government’s Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, that the improved and cheaper social broadband and phone tariffs that they’re now offering to customers on benefits (Home Essentials) will eventually become “unsustainable” without support.

Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is part of the BT Group, appears to have now officially stopped taking on new SME (small and medium-sized) business customers. A message on their website confirms that the products are “no longer available” and instead directs new customers to take up packages directly with BT.

Openreach (BT) has reportedly informed its suppliers that their need to curb costs and get more “bang for its buck” will impact the UK rollout of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which will “include an element of cancellation or suspension” of some work and have a “financial impact“.
