Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet has revealed that they’ve finally completed their exchange rollout (unbundling) programme, which means that over 80% of the United Kingdom should now be within reach of their cheaper on-net based Ethernet (leased lines) and broadband products (e.g. FTTP).

Mobile operator EE has successfully installed two new 4G mobile (mobile broadband) masts at Out Skerries and Foula on two of the UK’s most remote inhabited islands. This is also important because they mark the completion of the operator’s rollout under Scotland’s £28.75m 4G Infill programme (S4GI).

The BT Group has moved to simplify and speed up the delivery of its network services to customers (orders etc.) by adopting Ciena’s Blue Planet automation system, which essentially replaces half a dozen of their legacy systems and processes with more digital automation.

A coalition of community, conservation and outdoor recreation groups has called on the Government to review its “rushed” and “haphazard telecoms mast rollout” under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which aims to extend geographic 4G (mobile broadband) coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.

The Chief Security and Networks Officer of UK ISP BT (inc. EE and Plusnet), Howard Watson, has today published a blog post that reveals the approach they intend to take with customers as part of Openreach’s plan to close around 4,600 exchanges across the country – starting with a pilot in Deddington, Ballyclare and Kenton Road.

Stratospheric Platforms (SPL) and BT (EE) revealed earlier this year that they were developing a UK trial to harness High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) aircraft to help extend 5G (mobile broadband) coverage into remote rural areas (here). SPL now intends to trial similar technology, during 2024, aboard a Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.

BT Group has today published their triennial Pension Scheme (BTPS) valuation – one of the UK’s largest private sector pension schemes with c.270,000 members and £47bn of assets under management, which shows progress on their recovery plan and the funding deficit falling from £7.98bn in 2020 to £3.7bn now.

Residential customers of UK broadband ISP BT, specifically those who take their Pay TV service, are this week starting to be informed about the previously announced plan to re-brand their service to EE TV. The notice reveals that this change will officially take place from 6th December 2023.

Openreach (BT) has published an update on their Exchange Exit Pilot, which recognises the “resource-intensive nature” of the work for ISPs and has thus reduced the number of exchanges involved from five to three. All of this forms part of their plan to shut 4,500 exchanges, which will impact various broadband, PIA and Ethernet services.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across Hammersmith & Fulham in London, which concluded that EE delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes, while Three UK came last.

Openreach is developing an additional phone line product, which does NOT require a broadband connection to function and will be targetted at vulnerable and edge use cases (inc. CNI) users with old analogue phone lines (PSTN) who would otherwise “face challenges” in migrating to an All-IP (Internet Protocol) based solution by 2025.

Customers of EE (BT) are venting frustration after the mobile operator twice increased the price of their “Roam Abroad” add-on – making for a hike of 150% within the past year. The pass allows customers to use their existing allowances, at no extra charge, while in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand plus 47 European destinations.

The BT Group has published their latest H1 FY24 results to September 2023, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added a record of 860,000 premises to their coverage (up from 718k last quarter) and now covers 11.85 million premises, with a further 6m where initial build is underway.

UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (October 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering Ofcom’s flaky 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The operator has so far built a USO connection to over 7,681 premises (up from 7,000 in Apr 2023), with 185 further builds in progress (down from 800).
