Network access provider Openreach (BT) has notified UK ISPs about the launch of a rental discount offer on their 1Gbps Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) product for Local Access and Standard Access for new service provisions within the Central London Area (CLA).

Business ISP Gamma Communications has today announced that they’ve signed a 6-year commitment with B2B telecoms company O2 Daisy, which extends an existing agreement and has been expanded to reflect the recent merger between VMO2 Business (Virgin Media and O2) and Daisy Group. A 7-year wholesale revenue agreement is also involved.

The CEO of Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica, Marc Murtra, has told Reuters that the outcome of their Strategic Review will see the group buying up telecom assets in Europe, which could potentially include gobbling Liberty Global’s stakes in UK broadband and mobile giants nexfibre, Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2).

Telecoms giant BT has today announced that their Radianz unit, which is a global network and connectivity platform for the financial services industry that generated revenues of approx. £142m during 2024/25, is to be sold to Transaction Network Services (TNS) – a provider of ultra-low latency trading infrastructure – for an undisclosed sum.

Global network operator Netmore has today signed a 3-year deal with the UK’s second-largest water company, Severn Trent, to deploy and manage network services for 1 million smart meters across more than 20 counties. This will involve the deployment of a dual wireless Long Range Wide Area (LoRaWAN) and Narrowband-loT (NB-IoT) network.

Greg Mesch, the original founder and current CEO of the UK’s largest alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband network for ISPs, CityFibre, is reportedly to step down after setting the Openreach competitor up some 14 years ago in January 2011. The move comes shortly after the operator secured a crucial UK funding agreement worth £2.3bn (here).

Tewkesbury-based network operator Netomnia (Brsk, Youfibre), which has so far deployed their full fibre broadband (FTTP) lines to cover 2.7 million UK premises (375,000 customers), has today announced another major funding boost by successfully completing a £300 million junior debt raise, including an additional £140 million from new and existing investors.

The Speed Fibre Group, which is an open access fibre infrastructure provider (managing or owning 5,400km of fibre) that is ultimately backed by Cordiant Capital, has today announced that they’ve completed the previously announced (here) acquisition of BT’s Irish wholesale fibre and enterprise business unit (BT Communications Ireland Ltd.).

Several major UK banks, such as NatWest and Lloyds, among others, have confirmed that they’re setting aside funding to cover loans that were issued to alternative fibre broadband networks (altnets) and which are now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full.

The Managing Director of Regulation at UK broadband operator Openreach (BT), Mark Shurmer, has called on Ofcom to ensure that they soften market regulation on them in areas of the UK deemed to be competitive due to the presence of either Virgin Media’s fixed broadband network or those where there are three or more full fibre (FTTP) network providers present.

Work to restore the service remains ongoing, but sadly it is now known that a data breach has occurred.

A new survey of 200 “senior telecom decision-makers” from the USA, UK, and Australia, which was conducted by network technology firm RtBrick, has claimed that broadband ISP and mobile operators are at risk of being “overwhelmed by the demands of AI and streaming bandwidth” in the next 5 years – around 80% of respondents expect it to “crush” today’s networks.

The latest company accounts for broadband ISP Plusnet, which is part of wider BT Group, has revealed that the company’s turnover fell by -15% to £343m in the year to 31st March 2025 (down from £402m last year) and their employee headcount declined by 133 to total 944.
