O2’s (Virgin Media) joint deployment with IONX Networks (formerly Dense Air), which last year claimed to have become one of the first mobile operators in the UK to successfully integrate a neutral host Small Cell into their live 5G Standalone (SA) core network (here), has been cast into doubt after IONX fell into administration at the end of last year.

National operator Openreach (BT) has today warned that “more than half a million business lines” still haven’t migrated away from the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to new IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) alternatives, which with only 12-months to go until the service is switched-off risks firms being exposed to price hikes, as well as “failing equipment and eventual loss of service“.

Long-running UK ISP VISPA, which was first launched way back in 1999, appears to have begun informing customers that they’ve “ceased trading and decided to commence liquidation proceedings“. The provider’s remaining broadband subscribers have been told they will need to “immediately” find an alternative.

A new mobile virtual network operator service has just launched on the Channel Islands called Coop Mobile, which some readers might recall is partly the product of last year’s £48m deal to build a new “world-class” 5G mobile broadband network across the islands (reflecting Sure‘s acquisition rival Airtel Vodafone).

Broadband and mobile operator Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has today published their latest Q3 FY26 financial results. The figures show that they now have 1.768 million fixed broadband customers (up strongly by 64k in Q3 vs 50k in Q2) and a huge combined mobile base of 28.619m (down from 28.824m).

Telecoms giant BT Group just published a short trading update to the end December 2025 (Q3 FY26), which reveals that Openreach lost a total of 210,000 broadband lines to rivals over the past quarter (down from 242k in Sept 2025). But their “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage grew to 21.4 million premises (up from 20.3m) and take-up increased to 38% (up from 37.66%).

A new OnePoll survey of 1,000 small and medium-sized UK businesses (leaders and decision makers), which was commissioned by broadband and mobile provider Sky Business, has claimed that 66% of them have “run out of mobile data in the last two years“, resulting in missed sales and lost productivity until resolved (i.e. an estimated average revenue loss of £3,462 a year).

Several weeks have now passed since ISPreview revealed that one of the UK’s largest alternative full fibre broadband networks, Netomnia (Substantial Group), had decided to merge their two retail broadband ISPs – Brsk and YouFibre – into a single brand (here). Brsk have now begun to notify customers that they’re adopting YouFibre’s name.

European telecoms giants Telefónica and Liberty Global, the joint owners of Virgin Media and O2 in the UK, have reportedly now joined with private equity firm InfraVia Capital to progress their previously proposed £2bn bid to buy alternative full fibre broadband network Netomnia toward conclusion. The deal is likely to offer the altnet more than rival CityFibre could muster, but competition issues could be raised.

Brighton-based Flexgrid, which describes itself as the UK-focused connectivity aggregator for the channel market, has announced that they’ve launched a new website and now support the ability for partners to compare and order full fibre broadband services through a total of 24 alternative network (altnet) providers and suppliers.

The Common Wholesale Platform (CWP), which is a non-profit member-owned organisation that helps alternative UK broadband networks to connect with the retail ISP market, appears to have gone through a Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation. The company is now in the process of having its members, assets and brand scooped up by Digital Destiny Ltd.

Belfast-based IT and internet provider Barclay Communications, which mostly serves business customers, has reportedly reached a new wholesale partnership that will enable them to reach businesses across Northern Ireland via Fibrus’ new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network.

Network operator CityFibre, which have already deployed their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.7 million UK premises (4.5m RFS), has today confirmed that over 400 roles – roughly a third of their workforce (1,400) – could be at risk of redundancy as part of their “shift [in] strategy from building to acquiring networks“.

One of the UK’s largest alternative broadband networks, Netomnia (Substantial Group), has today reported their latest Q4 2025 results. The figures reveal that revenues on their full fibre (FTTP) network increased to £104m (up 168% year-on-year) and take-up reached 15% (up 28% YoY). Some 3 million premises are now covered (up by 245k in Q4 vs 241k in Q3).

The not-for-profit London Internet Exchange (LINX), which handles a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around 900+ members (broadband ISPs, mobile and CDN providers etc.), has revealed that last week’s UEFA Champions League, European League and Conference League games drove a new global internet traffic peak of over 12.069Tbps across the UK, US, Africa and Middle East.

The CEO of alternative UK broadband ISP and network builder CommunityFibre, Graeme Oxby, appears to have suggested that one of the reasons they opted not to make a bid for troubled rival G.Network stemmed from fears that rodents had chewed through its fibre optic cables. But the key issue may be more related to the general cost of maintenance than rats.
