Business ISP and managed service provider Evolve has today become the latest provider to hop onto MS3‘s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the North of England (mostly the East Riding of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire regions), which ultimately aims to reach 535,000 UK premises by the end of 2025.

Broadband network operator FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes), which is in the process of merging with follow operator Digital Infrastructure (BeFibre), has announced that their combined Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network now covers 300,000 UK premises (RFS) and they’ve just appointed James Warner as Interim CEO.

Surging inflation has meant that the past couple of years have been, to put it mildly, an uncomfortable experience for many broadband ISP and mobile users. In 2022 most consumers saw their prices rise by around 9% (here) and in 2023 that hit over 14% (here), but the predicted hikes for 2024 won’t be as bad.

Back in 2020 we reported on the launch of a new Birmingham-based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) called Zevvle (here), which offered a bit of a different twist on pay-as-you-go data (mobile broadband) pricing. But mounting costs and limited customer adoption appear to have now put an end to the provider.

A new report from business broadband ISP and communications provider Gamma and the Centre of Economics Business Research (CEBR) has claimed that 29% of UK businesses are still “completely unaware” of the upcoming move to switch-off the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in December 2025.

Horsham-based business telecoms and technology provider Global4 has today announced the acquisition of Gemini, which offers a similar range of broadband, I.T., voice and mobile connectivity solutions, for an undisclosed sum. Global4 hopes the deal will help to expand its offerings.

UK ISP TalkTalk has published their annual accounts to 28th Feb 2023 and revealed that their broadband base fell to 3.94 million (down from 3.98m in 2022), while the provider’s bosses also reportedly warned that there is “material uncertainty” ahead of an expect debt refinancing that “may cast significant doubt” over its future.

Network builder and UK broadband ISP Vorboss, which is investing £300 million to deploy a new 100Gbps full fibre network – dedicated to business – across central London, are preparing to introduce their own-designed “Vorspin” (working title – may change) cargo e-bike around the city in order to support their network rollout.

A new meta-study from consultancy firm Compass Lexecon has examined markets where mergers reduced the number of primary mobile network operators from 4 to 3 and found little evidence to suggest that they harm consumers, which could bode well for Vodafone and Three UK’s proposed, if still somewhat controversial, tie-up.

A new survey of business leaders and decision-makers from 160 UK companies, which was conducted by Neos Networks during June 2023, has claimed that one in every five UK businesses are receiving insufficient broadband speeds. Plus 42% regard moving to higher capacity connectivity in the next 2 years as key to growth plans.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) in England has issued a progress update on their ongoing £7m project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.), which reveals that 171 of the sites have been completed, while a further 22 sites are now due to be upgraded by 2024.

In a hint of what might happen in the UK a little further down the road. Sky Ireland and Virgin Media Ireland recently signed a significant wholesale network access agreement, which will enable Sky’s customers to harness Virgin’s full fibre broadband ISP network in the country.
