Alternative network builders Cityfibre and toob have today signed a unique network access agreement, which will see both sides aiming to benefit from each other’s deployments of their respective gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the UK.

Internet provider TalkTalk has recently become the latest UK ISP to jump on the bandwagon of ‘Black Friday‘ offers, which among other things includes a sharp price reduction across their various Openreach based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages. For example, their top 900Mbps tier is now just £42 per month (or £36 on Cityfibre).

Vodafone UK has this morning published their latest Q2 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed broadband ISP base grew again to total 1.111 million customers (up sharply by 39k in the quarter vs 22k in Q1 FY23) and their mobile base also surged again to total 17.543 million (up by 321k vs 115k in the previous quarter).

Leicestershire-based telecoms support and civil engineer firm HG Comms Ltd (HGC), which works with a number of UK broadband operators in different capacities (e.g. Cityfibre), has announced that they’ve been acquired by global infrastructure giant Vinci for an undisclosed sum.

Customers on TalkTalk’s 944Mbps Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO) broadband service in the City of York, which is a full fibre (FTTP) network that was originally launched in 2015 as part of a partnership with Sky Broadband and Cityfibre (here), have been informed that the “trial” service is now “coming to an end” because its “equipment is obsolete“.

Good news for consumers. Openreach appears set to launch another round of wholesale prices cuts for UK ISPs that sell their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband lines. Dubbed ‘Equinox 2‘ after last year’s discount, the move will help the operator to stay competitive. But some rivals may raise competition concerns.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has today responded to pressure from Ofcom by announcing the launch of their own social broadband tariff for those on benefits (Universal Credit etc.) – called ‘Essentials Broadband‘, which is one of the cheapest social tariffs on the market at £12 per month.
