At one point or another, most UK people will have probably attempted to run a web-based speed test on their broadband connection, but have you ever wondered how well some of the most popular speed testing services do when confronted by a fully capable 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) service? Openreach (BT) has today set out the wholesale prices that alternative network (AltNet) builders will have to pay when using the operator’s Ethernet (e.g. EAD) products to feed their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services to end-users, which caused some annoyance within the market.

Business communications provider aql has launched a new wavelength “Express Service” between the cities of Leeds and Manchester in England, which offers broadband ISPs and mobile operators, among others, access to a 1-100Gbps fibre optic link (capacity) by harnessing Network Rail’s new high-capacity trackside fibre network.

Neos Networks, which operates a 24,480km+ long fibre network via over 477 related Points of Presence (PoPs) across the UK, has completed its £1.5m state aid supported Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) rollout project in Perth, Scotland, ahead of schedule. As a result, 31 public sector sites can now access gigabit speeds.

Communications and IT provider Modern Networks, which is being fuelled by a recent investment from Horizon Capital, has today announced the acquisition of Cambridgeshire-based broadband ISP Bridge Fibre. The latter mostly serves commercial properties and multi-tenant buildings (e.g. on business parks).

Fibre optic broadband builder CityFibre (CF) has announced that their strategic partnership with Neos Networks, which enables both sides to take more advantage of each other’s respective fibre networks, is being expanded to work across a further 9 cities in the United Kingdom.

Business and residential UK ISP Glide Group, which has built a national UK “full fibre” broadband network that reaches over 100,000 premises, has announced that their network is being extended to reach businesses in Corby (Northamptonshire), including on the large Corby Gate Business Park (i.e. an upgrade to their previous copper network).

Good news. The NO-UK cable project, which is being managed by consultancy firm SubSea Networks, has confirmed that a new subsea fibre optic cable between Norway and the UK, with capacity for data speeds of up to 216Tbps (Terabits), has finally arrived on this side of the sea by landing at Seaton Sluice beach near Newcastle.

A new UK network operator with the imaginative title of Digital Infrastructure (DI) has today announced that they’ve partnered with Aberla Utilities as part of a 5-year contract to deliver Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband across around 38,000 homes in the Cheshire town of Crewe. But they’ll face more than a little competition.

The Manchester-based British Cables Company (BCC), which is a manufacturer of various cables, has secured a key multi-million pound contract to supply Openreach with a variety of fibre optic cables to support their ongoing UK rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet services.

Scientists in Japan have just shattered last year’s world record for the fastest fibre optic internet data transfer speed by using a four core fibre cable to transmit data at 319Tbps (Terabits per second) over a whopping distance of 3001km, which compares with the previous record (here) of 178Tbps over 40km in London UK.

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which currently works alongside Virgin Media Business (VMO2) to supply ultrafast broadband to c.3,000 schools in London (over 1.2 million children), reports that one of VMO2’s fibre optic cables has been “seriously damaged” and is disrupting connectivity to various schools and businesses.

At the start of this year ITS Technology, supported by the North Lincolnshire Council (NLC), began building a new 10Gbps capable “full fibre” Ethernet and broadband network to serve local businesses in the industrial town of Scunthorpe (Lincolnshire). The good news today is that this network has now gone live.

Last year Neos Networks scooped the £10.5m Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract to deploy a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network to connect 190 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings etc.) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. A total of 93 sites have now been completed, supported by 153km of new underground fibre cable.

Manchester-based UK ISP Telcom (ClearFibre, WeFibre etc.), which is busy deploying a gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network across the North West of England and Midlands, has managed to secure a significant investment of £63m from Gresham House, a specialist alternative asset manager.
