UK ISP Vorboss, which last year hinted at plans to bring their own FTTP broadband network to 250,000 premises (homes and businesses) in large UK urban areas by 2022 (here), has just completed one of their biggest projects so far after they hooked-up the 22 Bishopsgate building in London to a 100Gbps link.

A successful bid for investment has today resulted in Cardiff Council (Wales) securing a £500,000 funding boost from the Welsh Government (WG), which will be used to improve the cable duct infrastructure that transports a lot of fibre optic broadband and data connectivity around the city.

Businesses and some surrounding homes on the Hillhouse Technology Enterprise Zone in Wyre (Lancashire, England) look set to benefit after the local Wyre Council agreed to support a £250,000 extension (SPR-2) of the nearby Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN), which could widen the availability of gigabit broadband speeds.

Capita has today signed a new 5-year £8 million contract with Cheshire East Council in England, which will see them roll-out a Wide Area Network (WAN) to help provide data services for over 500 public sector sites (e.g. local councils, schools, fire and police service etc.) in the county. A new WiFi network is also planned.

Part of Shetland Telecom‘s fibre optic broadband network on the remote Shetland Islands (Scotland) was only slightly, albeit knowingly, damaged last Friday following the discovering of a WWII era pipe bomb, which had to be made safe through detonation by a professional bomb squad.

Scientists at the Optical Networks division of University College London (UCL) have successfully used experimental “hybrid discrete Raman and rare-earth doped fibre amplifiers” to achieve a record single core, single mode fibre throughput (net) speed of 178.08 Terabits per second over a distance of 40km.

The UK government’s new £900m Getting Building Fund (GBF), which seeks to help create new jobs, skills and infrastructure across England in order to aid the recovery from COVID-19, has announced its allocations to various regions. A few of the projects also include funding for new gigabit broadband and “full fibre” networks.

Ofcom has proposed to change their UK regulation as a result of Openreach’s (BT) recent commitment to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to a further 3.2 million rural properties, which will allow the operator to include these investment costs in its prices upfront.

Internet technology giant Google has announced plans to construct a new private subsea fibre optic cable – called ‘Grace Hopper‘ – between the USA (New York), United Kingdom (Bude in Cornwall) and Spain (Bilbao), which could improve the performance of their online services and ensure plenty of data capacity for the future.

The North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), which represents Newcastle, North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) and Northumberland, has announced that BT have secured the contract to deploy a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to help connect 271 public sector sites (council offices, libraries, NHS etc.).

Belfast-based UK broadband ISP Fibrus appears as if it could be set to secure a key £15m Full Fibre Northern Ireland Consortium (FFNI) contract, which will construct a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre or FTTP network to connect around 880 public sector sites across 10 council areas by March 2021.

The West Sussex County Council has joined other parts of the UK in helping to top-up the Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme with some of their own funding, which more than doubles the maximum value of vouchers to help local homes get a “gigabit-capable broadband” service installed.

Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has signed a 2 year extension contract with Emtelle, which is said to be worth £10m and will enable the internet provider to keep fuelling their deployments of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology with kit from the fibre manufacturer.

The Thurrock Council has announced that a contract for delivery of the £4.436 million state aid funded Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) build across South Essex, which aims to connect 129 public sector sites across Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Rochford and Thurrock with gigabit capable broadband, will soon be awarded.

The UK government (DCMS) will today launch a call for evidence as part of a new review of the Access to Infrastructure (ATI) Regulations 2016, which could enable “gigabit-capable” broadband operators to expand their networks by harnessing existing electricity, gas, water and sewer networks via infrastructure sharing.

Cityfibre has today announced a major recruitment and training drive, which over the next 3 years will see them create 10,000 jobs (engineers etc.). The move supports their £4bn investment (here) to roll-out a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across 8 million UK premises by around 2025.

Full fibre operator Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve started work on their latest £32m project to deploy a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the south coast city of Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK), which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk to follow).
