The Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) has announced that thousands of businesses, residents and communities across Mid Sussex will soon get access to a new “gigabit-capable” full fibre broadband network, which is being supported by an investment of £2.2m from the Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) scheme.

Mobile operator Three UK has today signed another fibre optic capacity deal, this time with Colt Technology Services, in order to help fuel their latest 5G and existing 4G based (mobile broadband) network. The deal will see Colt become a “preferred provider of fibre backhaul connectivity” for the operator.

After years of development BT and Toshiba have today announced that they’ve made the UK’s first “industrial deployment” of a quantum-secure network using Openreach’s “standard” fibre optic infrastructure, which runs between the National Composites Centre (NCC) and the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS).

The Solutions Director (Colin Kirkpatrick) for Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre and ducted network solutions for the industry, has told ISPreview.co.uk in a new interview that ISPs should focus on a “One Dig” strategy to boost the roll-out of “gigabit broadband” by building and sharing spare duct space.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that, as part of their effort to “deliver the UK’s fastest 5G network” and upgrade 4G connectivity (mobile broadband), they have signed a new £100m investment deal with SSE Enterprise Telecoms to upgrade their fibre optic capacity across 250 towns and cities.

A small team of Brazilian and Australian researchers have come up with a new way of fabricating optical fibre cable, which borrows some technology from modern 3D printers and could be both significantly faster and “at least 100 times cheaper” than existing methods.

A new report from global consultancy firm Arthur D. Little has revealed that 10 countries have now made “full fibre” (FTTP / FTTB) broadband ISP networks available to at least 95% of homes, although unsurprisingly the United Kingdom continues to be stuck at the back of the pack but we are showing rapid improvement.

This will support the operator’s new gigabit capable 5G based mobile broadband network.

The Northumberland County Council look set to approve an investment of £537,000 via the Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which will help 18 additional primary schools in rural parts of the county to get an “ultrafast gigabit capable” broadband ISP connection installed.
