The infrastructure equity investment arm of M&G Prudential, Infracapital, has purchased a 50% stake in UK communications provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET). The deal itself is said to be worth up to £380m and values the provider at more than £700m.

UK ISP Baltic Broadband and the not-for-profit Liverpool Internet Exchange (IX Liverpool) have today jointly announced that their 10Gbps business focused fibre optic network in Liverpool (Merseyside) has been expanded to include the Everton and Vauxhall areas.

Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear, which is currently still in the process of trying to tackle some significant civil engineering delays, has upgraded their core transport network to make use of Ciena’s 6500 Packet Optical platform. The move supports the provision of 100G channels across the UK.

A new report from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has warned that the UK Government must take “urgent action” and “fast track [new] laws” in order to ensure the delivery of its aspiration to achieve nationwide coverage of future 5G mobile by 2027 and “full fibre” (FTTP) Gigabit broadband ISP networks by 2033.

In response Ofcom has today begun consulting upon a new approach to how they set regulation and define such markets from 2021.

Now Vodafone has decided to go in the opposite direction by installing small antennas “below street level.”

The North of Tyne Combined Authority has announced that it will bid for £12m of public funding from Wave 3 of the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) fund, which could be used to extend “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) ISP networks to connect “tens of thousands of local homes and businesses.”

Cityfibre has secured the £11.9m contract to build a new Gigabit (1Gbps+) capable “full fibre” broadband / Ethernet network in Suffolk (England), which will initially focus on connecting public sector sites across 10 towns before being expanded to reach local businesses and possibly homes. ISP MLL Telecom is also involved.

Fibre optic broadband building Cityfibre has today joined forces with wireless infrastructure company Arqiva to construct the UK’s “largest” multi-million pound pilot of a new wholesale, 5G ready Small Cell infrastructure in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Mobile operators rejoice.

The President of the FTTH Council Europe, Ronan Kelly, has published a new open letter to EU telecoms ministers, which calls on them to stop “misleading fibre advertising” by UK and EU broadband ISPs that offer hybrid fibre services (e.g. FTTC); these are often significantly slower and less reliable than “full fibre” (FTTH).

The Zayo Group has announced that over the next 12 months they intend to upgrade and expand their existing long haul fibre optic ring network in the UK, which will improve its capacity, coverage and should provide access to the country’s latest subsea cable crossings in both the Irish and North Seas.

The Government has today published their ‘National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline’ report, which reveals the scale of public and private investment that is underway or expected to be put toward 5G mobile and broadband ISP connectivity (especially full fibre FTTP) between 2018/19 and 2020/21 (financial year).

A new study from the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), which did a systematic analysis of all of the 157 broadband measures that have been notified to the European Commission by Member States (inc. UK) between 2003 and August 2018, has warned that the current level of public funding is “insufficient“.

The FTTH Council Europe has today welcomed a vote by the European Parliament to approve the new European Electronic Communications Code (EECC), which could boost investment in “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband and 5G mobile. But they also called on the EU to get tough on “fake fibre” marketing by ISPs.

Poole-based ISP Juice Broadband has once again expanded the coverage of their 50Mbps capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) superfast broadband network in Dorset, which has just seen a new mast go live to cover more of the rural Purbeck and Studland areas. They’ve also launched a 300Mbps service for Bournemouth.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has signed a new collaboration agreement with the Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG), which will support the development of what is expected to be “Europe’s largest fibre connected small cell network” and trials of driverless vehicles using 5G tech in the West Midlands.

Utility infrastructure provider GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK / OFNL) has announced that a sixth ISP – BreezTel – is joining their platform and will thus be able to offer services over their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network, which is being deployed to some new build home developments.
