The UK telecoms regulator has today begun consulting on their new Business Connectivity Market Review 2018/19 (BCMR), which among other things is proposing “unrestricted access” to Openreach’s (BT) cable ducts / telegraph poles to boost fibre broadband. It will also try again to impose a Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product.

The government has published an “interim response” to the National Infrastructure Commission’s assessment of the UK’s long-term infrastructure needs (here), which among other things called for nationwide coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2033 and for a ‘National Broadband Plan’ to be devised by Spring 2019.

The UK Government’s Chancellor, Philip Hammond, is reported to be planning another investment boost of at least £250 million to help further extend the availability of Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband (FTTP / FTTH) links across more of the country. An announcement is expected on Monday as part of the Autumn Budget.

Some 4,000 small businesses in South Wales and South West England could benefit after network builder Nextgenaccess secured an investment of £22m from the UK Government backed National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF), which among bigger plans will also build a new 80km fibre optic link between Bristol and Newport.

The Zayo Group has announced that they intend to expand the reach of their metro fibre optic data network around the UK’s capital city, which will involve the construction of a new fibre route that runs from Hatfield in Hertfordshire to Stratford in East London.

PCCW Global Networks UK (formerly Keycom), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong telco HKT and is 63% owned by PCCW, plans to further invest in the UK by growing its fibre broadband (FTTP/B) business to supply large, multi-tenanted properties and multiple businesses that are in close proximity.

Mobile operators Three UK and O2 have moved to improve the data capacity of their 3G, 4G and future 5G mobile networks in London by signing a new agreement with SSE Enterprise Telecoms. Under this deal the latter will use its high-capacity fibre optic ring in central London to help link up cell sites.

Business ISP Elite has become one of the first to offer a product based off Openreach’s new OSA Filter Connect service, which is kind of a virtual (grey) dark fibre style solution that can offer scalable bandwidth from 10Gbps to 100Gbps synchronous (without having to regrade the fibre due to limitations at the exchange).

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has recruited TV celebrity Dominic Littlewood – famous for The One Show, Fake Britain and Cowboy Builders (among others) – to help support their on-going campaign against “misleading” uses of “fibre” terminology in adverts by slower hybrid fibre broadband ISPs.

We’re saddened to report that Nobel Prize winner Sir Charles Kuen Kao (aka – “Father of Fibre Optics“), whom was jointly awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for “ground-breaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication“, passed away yesterday at 11:45am in Hong Kong.

The Edinburgh-based Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG), which builds masts and other fibre optic connected UK mobile infrastructure, has completed a debt fund raising of £220 million that will be used to help mobile operators upgrade and construct new 5G ready wireless networks.

Within the next week Cityfibre will finally begin the deployment of a new 1Gbps+ fibre optic broadband and Ethernet network in West Sussex, which aims to connect 152 council sites in Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Littlehampton, Shoreham and Worthing.

Gigabit broadband and Ethernet speeds look set to connect public sector sites, businesses and social housing in the metropolitan borough of Tameside. The news comes after a new alliance was formed to help extend The Loop, which is known as Greater Manchester’s largest independent fibre optic network.

Sky’s business-to-business division has today announced the launch of their new Sky Ethernet service into the market (channel), which will be delivered via over 2,800 exchanges and a 7,500km fibre network that claims to cover 96% of UK business postcodes.

The UK Government has today opened the final (Wave 3) round of bidding for £95 million in funding to local authorities as part of their £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund, which aims to stimulate commercial investment in “gigabit capable” broadband networks (rural and urban).
