The £264m Digital Scotland project, which aims to ensure that 85% of Scottish homes and businesses can access BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network by the end of 2015 and around 95% by the end of 2017, has revealed the first 8 areas to benefit and most appear to be in the Highlands and Islands region.

Some 31,000 customers have now subscribed to a superfast broadband (FTTC/P) connection in Cornwall thanks to BT’s joint £132m public (EU) and privately funded Superfast Cornwall project, which aims to make the operators network available to 95% of local premises by the end of 2014.

The CEO of budget Internet provider TalkTalk, Dido Harding, has once again reiterated her belief that BT is “acting anti-competitively” in the market for superfast broadband (FTTC) products and she wants them to cut the related wholesale price that it charges ISPs to around £4 +vat a month.

A partnership of five councils led by Liverpool City Council will today sign a new state aid supported £15.9m deal with BT to roll-out its “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to up to 98% of homes and businesses in the metropolitan county of Merseyside (North West England) by the end of July 2016.

The North and North East Lincolnshire project to roll-out BT’s “high-speed fibre” (FTTC/P) based broadband network has received an additional boost of £1.2 million that should extend it to an extra 5,000 premises and a total coverage of 92% of local homes and businesses.

It’s been a long time coming but all six Berkshire unitary authorities (Councils) in south east England have today agreed to a new state aid supported £8 million deal with BT, which will roll-out a “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to cover “around” 91% of local premises by the end of September 2015.

The incumbent telecoms provider for Hull and East Yorkshire in England, KC, has told ISPreview.co.uk that they will “strive to meet the more ambitious 2020 goals” set by Europe (i.e. 100% of households should have access to superfast broadband speeds of at least 30Mbps) and most of this will be delivered via true fibre optic (FTTH/P) connectivity.

The Welsh Government has today announced that another 151 towns and villages in Wales will get access to BT’s fibre broadband (FTTC/P) network by spring 2015 (covering 206,000 premises). The new areas join 120 communities that have already been announced (here) for upgrades by spring 2014.

The CSW Broadband project, a partnership of eight local authorities which aims to ensure that BT’s fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P) coverage is extended to 92% of Coventry, 96% of Solihull and 91% of Warwickshire (overall 91% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) by spring 2016, has published an updated rollout map.

BTOpenreach, which helps to maintain and upgrade BT’s national telecoms network, has confirmed that the first customer trials of VDSL2 Vectoring technology (ITU-T G.993.5) are live. The new technology could deliver a significant speed boost to users of the operators existing up to 80Mbps hybrid-fibre (FTTC) superfast broadband network.

Hull ISP KC has announced a new deal with six local student accommodation providers that will make their superfast fibre optic (FTTC / FTTH) based Lightstream broadband service available to thousands of students studying at the University of Hull in East Yorkshire (England).

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published its annual State of Broadband Report 2013, which found that superfast fibre optic (FTTH) and hybrid fibre (FTTC) style services were continuing to cannibalise copper (ADSL) connections and that the UK had improved to be ranked 10th in the world for fixed line broadband penetration (up from 12th).
