The Worcestershire County Council (WCC), which recently signed a state aid supported £20.75m deal with BT to make “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) available to 90% of local premises by mid-2016 (here), has warned that it could use some of the money to overbuild an existing superfast wireless broadband network.

A new study has claimed that Europe will fail to make superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP speeds available to 100% of households by 2020. But it will achieve 90% coverage and most of that will be due to the mass adoption of hybrid-fibre (e.g. FTTC and cable) technologies that combine fibre optic with existing copper or coax cables.

Shropshire-based ISP Aquiss has begun offering free installation alongside their superfast unlimited “fibre” (FTTC) broadband packages, which will save new customers £96 inc. VAT off the normal retail price. A second discount is also added if you take their phone (line rental) service.

BTOpenreach has advised ISPreview.co.uk that their first trial of VDSL Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) technology, which could make even faster speeds available to more people on BT’s superfast (‘up to’ 80Mbps) hybrid-fibre (FTTC) broadband network, has been delayed a little but should now begin “within the next few weeks“.

The Essex County Council (ECC) in England will today become the latest UK local authority to sign a major state aid supported deal with telecoms giant BT, which will allow the operator to extend the reach of its “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to “around” 87% of premises by the end of summer 2016 (the rest will get at least 2Mbps).

The £41 million state aid supported Better Broadband for Norfolk project in England, which is a joint project between the government (BDUK), county council and BT, has revealed the next batch of 71 local communities that can expect an upgrade to superfast broadband (FTTC/P) technology.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has awarded its state aid supported £20 million contract for expanding the coverage of fibre optic based broadband connectivity to BT, which aims to make it’s up to 80Mbps capable FTTC network available to 95% of local premises by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get at least 2Mbps).

BT has today signed another state aid supported £27 million scheme with Derbyshire County Council (DCC), which aims to help expand the coverage of their fibre optic (FTTC/P) based broadband network to reach 95% of local premises by the end of 2016.

The Suffolk County Council has confirmed that its state aid supported £40 million contract with BT, which aims to make superfast fibre broadband services available to 85-90% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015, has connected its first street cabinet and will now be able to connect 16 areas by September 2013 (3 months ahead of schedule).

The joint BT and state aid supported Superfast Cymru project, which aims to make broadband speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016 2015 (Q4), has revealed that 100,000 new premises in Wales will have access to the operators fibre (FTTC/P) network by the end of this year.

BT has today signed two new state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) contracts that will help to make their fibre broadband (FTTC/P) network available to 90% of Worcestershire premises by mid-2016 and bring superfast access (25Mbps+) to 90% of Oxfordshire by the end of 2015.

Ofcom has published their annual 2013 Communications Market Report, which covers everything about the United Kingdom’s media and telecom industries. The study reveals that NGA / superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP services are now available to 73% of the country (up from 65% last year) and uptake has surged to 17.5% (up from just 6.5%) or 3.8 million subscribers.

BT Group has today released their latest financial results to 30th June 2013 (Q2), which saw the operators retail ISP division increase their fixed line broadband subscribers by +95,000 in the quarter to total 6,799,000 (down from the +136k added in Q1-2013 and +122k in Q4-2012).
