The Government’s Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, has wrongfully claimed that its Building Digital UK programme has now helped to push fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network coverage to 97% of UK premises (the expectation is that this could reach around 98% by the end of 2020).

The Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2013 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,123,530 extra premises (up by +46.9K since Q4 2018), has just published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2019. Coverage continues to grow, albeit slowly as contracts near their end.

Hampshire-based UK ISP Onestream has launched an intriguing new broadband package called “Jetstream Lite Fibre Unlimited,” which is unique because it appears to be based off Openreach’s (BT) national Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL) network and yet only promises a max download speed of 20Mbps (2Mbps upload).

In a surprise twist The Takeover Panel has ordered that the proposed sale of the incumbent telecoms and broadband operator for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, should go to auction after neither of the two bidders were able to declare their offers for the company as “final“. The stage is now set for a c.£600m sale.

Ofcom has today published their 2019 Communications Market Report (CMR), which reveals the latest information about the take-up and impact of Fixed Line Broadband, Phone, Mobile, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

ISP Vodafone has today gone live in 7 UK cities with their new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network. At the same time they’ve moved to challenge Three UK by introducing a new range of SIM-only and handset plans with “unlimited data” (also on 4G services). A new home broadband (FTTC) and mobile bundle is coming too.

Long-time readers of ISPreview.co.uk will know that Openreach (BT) has had plenty of issues when trying to get network upgrades working at their optimal on their estate of ECI supplied street cabinets (particularly for hybrid fibre FTTC broadband ISP services). Now it looks like they might possibly be about to replace some of them.

Internet provider Pulse8 Broadband has cut the monthly rental price of their unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) packages for homes and small businesses by -£2.40 inc. VAT, which is offered alongside their usual 1 month minimum contract term.

Overall the picture is one of gradual improvement, thanks to rising take-up of faster connections.

Customers taking part in Sky Broadband’s new SOGEA product trial are also being provided with a new router (SR203), which is probably the long awaited successor to their current Sky Q Hub (ER110) device and will most likely be shipped alongside future G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” packages (possibly FTTC).

UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today announced that customers of their Home::1 2TB broadband package, which includes 2000GB (GigaBytes) of monthly usage, will see their monthly prices cut by £5 per month. Meanwhile those with a 300GB allowance on Home::1 300GB will be upgraded to 2000GB for the same price.

UK ISP BT has changed their gadget offer for June, which means that new customers who take one of their broadband bundles are being offered the choice of either a free Amazon Echo, JBL 650 Live Headphones or Samsung Tablet A when they sign-up to the service. This is on top of the usual reward cards (pre-paid MasterCard).

New customers to the broadband ISP division of John Lewis are being offered an included Google Home Hub AI smart speaker system alongside any order of their broadband and phone packages (available to take until 30th July 2019), which is on top of an existing 12 month discount for service rental.

The European Commission has published their 2019 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2018 to reveal how the UK’s fixed line broadband and mobile networks compare with the rest of the EU. This year we jumped in overall rank from 6th to 5th out of 28 countries but are only 10th for connectivity.

The Scottish Government’s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has confirmed that contracts for the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) superfast broadband project won’t now be signed until the “end of the year,” which suggests that the rollout may be unable to complete by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial) as planned.

Openreach (BT) has announced plans to trial higher levels of ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology on their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “superfast broadband” capable ISP lines, which they believe could slightly improve service speed and help stability.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed the final details for how the new 10Mbps+ (1Mbps upload) Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband – to be supplied by ISPs BT and KCOM – will be delivered and work once it’s introduced from 20th March 2020.
