The Managing Director of Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet, Giles Phelps, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part our exclusive interview that the Government’s roll-out of superfast broadband is “about 5 years too late” and that future projects should focus on ultra-fast FTTH/P broadband with fixed wireless for remote rural areas.

Deploying a new ultrafast (940Mbps capable) fibre optic broadband network in urban areas is never easy, as demonstrated by Cityfibre’s joint roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) service with Sky Broadband and TalkTalk in York where some areas could need corrective work.

The latest information on the availability of true ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) services, most of which are capable of delivering Gigabit class speeds (1000Mbps), has estimated that some 351,642 premises in the United Kingdom are now within reach of such a service (up from 251,522 last year).

The Broadband Stakeholders Group, which advises the Government on broadband matters, has published a new report that aims to predict the future requirements of small UK businesses (SMEs). The conclusion finds that SMEs will see median downstream demand rise from 5Mbps in 2015 to just 8.1Mbps by 2025, but the overall picture is more complex.

Sky Broadband appears to have quietly unveiled the pricing for their forthcoming “Sky Ultra Fibre Optic” service in the city of York (England), where they’re working alongside Cityfibre and TalkTalk to roll-out a new 940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network. Oddly, line rental still exists.

A new survey of 3,000 Brits commissioned by Hyperoptic, which is deploying “hyperfast” (1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband services around a number of UK cities, has claimed that people would spend 8% (+£14,000) more on a new home if it came with a 100Mbps+ connection.

UK ISP Gigaclear, which recently won the contract to ensure that 6,495 additional rural premises in Gloucestershire (England) are able to receive “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband by the end of 2017, has announced that Seven Springs in Cockleford will be the first to benefit.

Most people are probably familiar with Gigaclear as an ISP that has put huge investment towards delivering ultrafast 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P) services into rural areas, but a new deal with Europasat (SSW) will soon also see them supporting the roll-out of inferior Satellite.
