The past couple of years have been awash with news and predictions about rising consolidation within the UK’s market for alternative fixed broadband networks (altnets). But keeping track of so many developments can be difficult, so ISPreview has decided to start a new tracker, which monitors related announcements since 2020 onwards.

Hampshire-based altnet and UK ISP toob, which has built a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network across parts of South England and also harnesses CityFibre’s network in other areas, appears to have recently removed the core part of Waterlooville (Hampshire, England) from their future roll-out plan.

Network access provider Openreach has also announced a bunch of separate but related changes across their range of Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and complementary SOGEA (standalone FTTC broadband etc.) broadband products for UK ISPs today, which reflects a mix of the usual annual price increase and some special offers.

Network operator Openreach (BT) is preparing to introduce yet another new discount for UK ISPs and their broadband customers. This reduces the one-off connection (install) charge for New to Network (NTN) orders of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband lines to £0 (standard connections normally start at £122.84 +vat).

A few years have passed since we first reported on business-focused network operator GigaAir and their plan to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and fixed wireless broadband network across parts of Scotland (here). The good news is that their combined network now passes in excess of 6,500 business premises across Glasgow City Centre.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published their December 2025 update on the delivery progress of contracts that have been awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The update reveals that some 183,380 contracted premises (up from 167,770 in Nov 2025) have so far been covered out of a planned total of 1,002,210.

Alternative broadband ISP Quickline, which is building a new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England (3-Year Rollout Plan), has today announced that as part of their roll-out they’ve now connected 50 community hubs (QHubs) to their new network.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published the results of their Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR) for the Hull-area of East Yorkshire, which sets out how they intend to promote competition and investment in gigabit broadband (inc. business connectivity) across an area of c.198,000 premises that was previously totally dominated by KCOM’s network.

Internet connection testing firm Opensignal has today published their 2025 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of major ISPs across the UK including BT (inc. EE), Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Three UK, Virgin Media and Vodafone. Overall, Virgin Media scored wins in every single national connectivity category.

Alternative internet provider Airband, which has built a mix of both Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) based broadband networks to cover various rural parts of Wales and South West England, has today announced that they’ve hit their target of reaching 30,000 customers (up from 19,000 in March 2024).

Network provider PlatformX Communications (PXC), which is a trading name of UK internet provider TalkTalk and sells wholesale solutions to ISPs (inc. other network providers), has today announced that they’ve made CityFibre’s Business Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services available to all their partners.

Network access provider Openreach has announced that they will soon temporarily allow a “bulk relaxation” of FTTP Priority Exchange “Stop Sell” rules across the UK (excluding Northern Ireland), under certain criteria, in order to help migrate old lines off their legacy Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) service.

The Northern Irish Department for the Economy (DfE) has today announced that they’ve awarded the £34.6m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract to alternative network ISP Fibrus, which will be tasked with extending their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 9,000 of the hardest to reach rural homes and businesses.

London-focused ISP Vorboss and its backers, which have built and operate a 100Gbps speed fibre optic network for businesses in the UK’s capital city, have been told to expect a “rather public legal battle” after the company’s former founder and CEO, Tim Creswick, revealed via Linkedin that he was now “suing the company I created 20 years ago“.

Rochdale-based broadband ISP Zen Internet has today followed their recent acquisition of Fibrehop‘s customer base (here) by announcing that they’ve also agreed to acquire Lit Fibre’s customers. This follows a decision by Lit’s Board to exit the UK internet access market, after previously selling the full fibre network they built to CityFibre.

The National Wealth Fund (NWF), which was originally established by the previous government in 2021 as the UK Infrastructure Bank (here) – using public investment to help unlock more private funding for infrastructure projects, looks set to change its funding strategy in 2026 after experiencing “challenges” in certain sectors, such as broadband infrastructure (altnets).

Network provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today highlight how it’s making a “major investment” in the Manchester region through investments in its fibre optic broadband and 5G mobile networks, as well as the opening of a new multi-million-pound North West HQ building on John Dalton Street (just off Deansgate).
