Alternative rural broadband ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is a community benefit society that has so far built their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 30,000 premises across England, has today announced that they’ve just connected their 15,000th customer (up from 14,000 a year ago).

Network operator nexfibre and supporting retail broadband ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), which share some of the same parentage, have today announced that they’ve expanded the reach of their symmetric 2Gbps speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to more than 13,000 homes in the Gloucestershire market town of Stroud for the first time.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has once again tweaked their Proactive FTTP Upgrades process for ISPs, which will allow providers to optionally reduce the normal lead time down to just 15+ calendar days (vs the default 6 weeks). Normally it’s consumers that initiate an upgrade, but with proactive upgrades the initiator is your ISP (this may help with copper to full fibre migrations).

Greg Mesch, the original founder and current CEO of the UK’s largest alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband network for ISPs, CityFibre, is reportedly to step down after setting the Openreach competitor up some 14 years ago in January 2011. The move comes shortly after the operator secured a crucial UK funding agreement worth £2.3bn (here).

One of the UK’s largest alternative broadband networks, Netomnia (Substantial Group), has revealed that they’re in the process of joining Openreach’s (BT) network in order to harness their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products in areas where their network doesn’t yet reach or may be unlikely to reach in the future. But the initial reach will be limited.

Alternative network provider and UK ISP CommunityFibre, which has deployed a 5Gbps speed full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to cover 1.342 million UK homes (plus c.200k businesses) – mostly in London, has today reduced their somewhat industry leading 60 Day Satisfaction Guarantee to 30 days. But this is still better than many other providers can do.

ISPreview has discovered that the Crawley Borough Council (CBC) in West Sussex (England) has just awarded the ITS Technology Group with a contract for their new £1.5 million (state aid) project, which aims to provide every business in Manor Royal (business park) with the ability to connect to gigabit broadband.

Tewkesbury-based network operator Netomnia (Brsk, Youfibre), which has so far deployed their full fibre broadband (FTTP) lines to cover 2.7 million UK premises (375,000 customers), has today announced another major funding boost by successfully completing a £300 million junior debt raise, including an additional £140 million from new and existing investors.

The Kent County Council (KCC) in England has complained to the UK government about a “lack of progress” being made on the region’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for rural communities. The £112m (state aid) contract for this was awarded to CityFibre in early 2024 (here), which committed to extend full fibre to 50,000+ hard-to-reach premises.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, has today posted somewhat of a belated welcome to the new Digital and Technologies Sector Plan. But they also warn that “further clarity is needed” on how the Government will support competition as FTTP rollouts slow and consolidation pressures grow.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has indicated, via a new briefing, that they are “making a limited volume” of Saturday provision (installation) appointments available for Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband line deployments. Retail ISPs will be able to select these if they so desire, at least for a limited time.

The Government has modified the Single Supplier Framework agreement that they awarded to Openreach (BT) last year under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme (here). The deal was originally valued at “up to” £800m and designed to help upgrade 312,000 premises in some of the hardest to reach UK areas to FTTP. But this has just been boosted in value to £1.2bn.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK (VodafoneThree) has today confirmed that they’ve now gone live on CommunityFibre’s alternative Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based fixed line network in London. The provider says this means that 550,000 “additional” homes across all 32 boroughs can now access their broadband plans at speeds of “up to” 2.2Gbps.

In news that will surprise none of ISPreview’s regular readers. Several major UK banks, such as NatWest and Lloyds, among others, have confirmed that they’re setting aside funding to cover loans that were issued to alternative fibre broadband networks (altnets) and which are now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full.

Mobile and broadband ISP EE (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview that the approach they currently take on their top 1.6Gbps speed Full Fibre (FTTP) package, which partly cuts BT Wholesale out of the equation, is set to be adopted across their slower tiers too (900Mbps and lower). But customers aren’t expected to notice any real difference.
