Mobile operator and UK ISP EE has begun contacting existing customers of their fixed line home broadband and phone packages in order to inform them of a price hike, which will see some but not all of their related packages increasing by an “average” of +£2 extra per month.

Business and consumer ISP Cerberus Networks has today become one of the very few UK internet providers to launch both a 500Mbps and 1Gbps broadband tier using Openreach’s (BT) premium Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products. On top of that they’ve also reduced the price of their hybrid fibre G.fast packages.

The UK High Court of Justice has today dismissed Cityfibre’s Judicial Review of the Advertising Standards Authority’s decision to allow slower “part fibre” (hybrid fibre) ISPs to use “fibre” terminology in their broadband adverts, which Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTH/P) providers have long felt to be “misleading“.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has completed the deployment of ASSIA’s CloudCheck software to their Wi-Fi Hub (Sagemcom F@st 5364) broadband router, which they claim can “proactively” improve the wireless (WiFi) performance of the device through “contextual analytics” and “machine-learning algorithms“.

A new study using crowd-sourced data (consumer speedtests) is helping to reveal how the market share of different broadband ISP technologies (ADSL, FTTC, FTTP, G.fast, Cable and Wireless) has changed over the past seven years, which sees older pure copper line connections decline as hybrid fibre solutions dominate.

New customers of UK ISP BT can now get an included Google Home AI smart speaker (RRP £129) when they sign-up to one of the provider’s Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC), Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) or G.fast based broadband and phone packages. Reward cards (Preloaded MasterCard) valued between £30 to £120 are also included.

A recent report from the Centre for Cities think-tank has revealed the top ten best and worst cities for coverage of fixed “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) connectivity across the United Kingdom, which sees Luton rank top with 95% of homes and businesses being within reach and sadly Aberdeen came bottom on 2.3%.

The Broadband Forum has today announced that the first five G.fast devices running at 212MHz have successfully completed their certification program, which tested the kit at speeds of up to 1.45Gbps and copper line distances of up to 400 metres from the distribution point (cabinet/remote node etc.).

UK ISP BT has launched a new range of special offers on their superfast (FTTC) and ultrafast (G.fast, FTTP) broadband packages, which among other things gives new customers a choice of taking either an included Samsung Tablet A 10.1 (worth £179), Fitbit Charge 3 (worth £129.99) or Amazon Echo (worth £89.99).

BT Group has released their results to the end of December 2018 (Q3 – 18/19 financial), which reports that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) UK ISP network has grown its coverage from 1.97m premises passed to 2.6m in the last quarter. Take-up of FTTP is 29.9% and G.fast just 0.88%.

At the end of last year BT launched a new “coverage guarantee” for their premium “Plus” packages (here), which pledged to deliver strong WiFi signals across your whole home via a new “Complete Wi-Fi” solution. The UK ISP has now expanded this to new non-Plus customers and thrown in 1 year of Amazon Prime access.

Ofcom has released their annual infrastructure report, which reveals that just 2% of the UK (677,000 premises) cannot access a 10Mbps capable fixed line broadband ISP service (down from 4% in 2017), while “full fibre” (FTTP) is available to 6% (up from 3%) and geographic coverage of 4G mobile has hit 66% (up from 43%).

Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that their new Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) product, which enables consumers to buy a standalone FTTC “fibre broadband” (VDSL2 or G.fast) line without the voice (phone) service, will enter the UK ISP pilot phase on 9th January. The first prices have also been published.

As predicted Openreach (BT) has today announced the forthcoming launch of a new Proof of Concept (PoC) trial, which will make it possible for ISPs to offer customers a “self install” (i.e. no engineer required) variant of their new 330Mbps capable G.fast (hybrid fibre) based ultrafast broadband service.

A new report has estimated that around 4.6% of premises in the United Kingdom could be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network, which is up from 4.1% in April 2018 and might stop you from being able to order a new service.
