UK ISP BT has introduced a significant reduction worth up to £10-£15 off the monthly price of their two fixed line “ultrafast broadband” packages, which are sold via the hybrid fibre G.fast and full fibre FTTP technologies. The catch is that you now have to take out a lengthy 24 month contract term.

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) has today officially made their new G.fast powered Ultrafast 1 (145Mbps) broadband and VoIP (SOGEA) phone packages available for both new and existing customers to order. Prices start from £39 per month and there’s a £39.95 one-off setup fee (we think it’s a free upgrade for existing customers).

UK ISP Sky Broadband is this week expected to put their new range of G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” packages live for everybody, which follows an initial soft launch in August (here). The bad news is that those waiting for FTTP (Openreach) to be supported may now have to wait until Q1 2020.

A new survey of 135 Somerset-based firms, which was undertaken online by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce in partnership with local rural “full fibre” broadband ISP Truespeed, has claimed that 42% of businesses still don’t have access to “fibre broadband” and half of respondents suffered daily or weekly drop-outs in service.

UK ISP BT has today introduced new ‘Wi-Fi Controls’ for their latest Smart Hub 2 broadband router, which essentially gives customers a greater ability to manage the internet access of their family or network members (e.g. pausing internet access and setting timed access for up to 15 specific network devices / users etc.).

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, is this week expected to commit £5bn of public funding in order to support his seemingly now watered down ambition to have “Gigabit broadband sprouting in every home” by the end of 2025 (full fibre, cable broadband, 5G etc.).

Several industry sources have indicated to ISPreview.co.uk that they now expect the Government to water down Boris Johnson’s (Prime Minister) pledge to cover the United Kingdom in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2025, which will instead be replaced by “gigabit” or “gigafast” terminology (i.e. delivery by more than just full fibre).

Openreach (BT) has today informed ISPs that they are holding off giving any further guidance on future build plans for their hybrid fibre G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) technology, which means that under the existing rollout they will only cover 2.73 million UK premises by March 2020..

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today taken the official wraps off their new Sky Hub (SR203 / Sky Q Hub 2) wireless broadband router and confirmed the launch of a new Sky WiFi Guarantee, the latter of which also comes with the existing “Boost” add-on features but costs +£5 extra per month instead of the current +£2.50.

A few customers with G.fast based hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP lines have this week noticed a modest boost to their download speeds after a resync, which appears as if it could be associated to an interesting change with the operator’s spectrum frequency allocation (band plan) for the service.

22nd August, 2019 (12 Comments)

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that their new Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA / SOGFast) product, which enables consumers to buy a standalone FTTC “fibre broadband” (VDSL2 or G.fast) line from an ISP without the voice (phone) service, has now entered Early Market Deployment and published revised prices.

The long awaited launch of UK ISP Sky Broadband’s (Comcast) new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and G.fast based “Ultrafast Broadband” (145Mbps and 285Mbps average speed) packages looks to be imminent and one of our readers was able to grab a screenshot of the pricing, which is not yet showing for everyone.

BT Group has today published their latest results to the end of June 2019 (Q1 19/20 financial), which reveals that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP networks have grown their coverage to 1.51 million and 2.16 million UK premises respectively (overall total of 3.7m, up from 3.2m last quarter).

Customers of BT’s (EE) retail fixed line broadband ISP business (around 9.4 million of them) hit a new record level of internet data traffic after the network peaked at around 13Tbps (Terabits per second) in March, which is up from 10.4Tbps at roughly the same time last year. Sometimes trying to figure out why a service, which was built a long time ago, hasn’t yet gone live is harder than it should be and that’s particularly true when the operator that did the work (Openreach) claims it doesn’t know the answer either. So begins the unusual saga of Street Cabinet 82 in Hunslet (Middleton, South Leeds).

Business ISP Structured Communications has today fully launched a sibling provider called Ghost Gamer Broadband, which as you might expect from the name “aims to deliver a best-in-class online experience to the UK’s competitive online gaming community.”
