The United Kingdom has been named in a new study as one of the most inexpensive countries in the European Union for 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband and call services, which is in no small part thanks to Three UK’s increasingly cheap data tariffs. By comparison the Czech Republic and Cyprus came out as the most expensive.

A new Opinium survey of 1,001 UK adults, which was commissioned by uSwitch.com and conducted during mid December 2018, has found that 86% of rail travellers struggle to connect to the internet via WiFi or 3G / 4G mobile (mobile broadband) on their Smartphones while commuting to work.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has revealed that they intend to offer the Huawei 5G CPE Pro device as a “home router” alongside their future mobile broadband service for UK homes, which can in theory deliver peak speeds of “up to” 4.6Gbps in the sub-6GHz radio spectrum bands or up to 6.5Gbps using mmWave spectrum.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica), which is currently home to a UK customer base of 32.6 million, has today announced that they will commence the roll-out of their next generation ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network during 2019. The first cities to benefit will be Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London.

Crowd-sourced data analyst firm OpenSignal has today published a new report that examines how future 5G based Mobile Broadband networks could solve the congestion problems of current 4G networks, which includes a ranking of 77 countries by average download speed experienced at different times of day.

The inevitable has happened. Fixed wireless broadband ISP Relish, which use to be part of UK Broadband Ltd. until the latter was gobbled up in 2017 by mobile operator Three UK for £250m (here), is being re-branded from 1st April 2019 to reflect the name of its parent – Three Broadband – and their future plans.

Download speeds of up to 200Mbps have been seen after Vodafone UK added Manchester Airport to their public test sites for future 5G based Mobile Broadband technology. As a result travellers have been able to try ultrafast broadband speeds by connecting to the new network via WiFi.

The Government has today set out its first ever Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for UK mobile and broadband services, which requires Ofcom to reflect in their work the need to build “world-class digital infrastructure“, look at mobile roaming in rural areas and tackle the so-called “loyalty penalty” etc.

A consortium of organisations in Worcestershire (England) have today switched-on Britain’s first factory trial of future 5G mobile technology, which is being funded by a grant of £4.8m from the UK government and will examine how the technology can help “smart factories” to become more productive.

The latest KPMG report into the readiness of countries for the adoption of driverless cars (autonomous vehicles) has seen the United Kingdom fall two places to be ranked 7th overall, which is just behind Sweden and Finland. Apparently we’re being hampered by poor infrastructure, particularly 4G mobile coverage and road quality.

New research from Rural England CIC, which found that mobile calls cannot be made inside 33% of rural buildings on any network (vs 3% in urban premises), has warned that people living in UK rural areas are being “cut off from building businesses” and accessing digital services due to “inadequate” connectivity.

The latest survey of 27,000 UK train passengers from Transport Focus (TF) has revealed that just 33% of commuters are satisfied with the reliability of their on-board internet connection (up from 30% last year) and 36% were satisfied with the availability of WiFi. Heathrow Express came top with 74% satisfied.

The telecoms regulator has warned O2 (Telefonica UK) that there are “reasonable grounds” for believing that they failed to provide “accurate and complete answers” as part of last year’s investigation into the mobile operator’s Traffic Management practices on their 3G and 4G network.

The AutoAir project, which is supported by a £4.1m Government grant, has confirmed that the UK’s first independent 5G enabled trial of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) will go live this month at the Millbrook Proving Ground (Bedfordshire). Mobile broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps are expected.

The UK Government has abandoned part of their £35m trial of 5G based mobile broadband and fibre optic technology on the Trans Pennine rail (train) route between Manchester and York, which is a joint effort between Network Rail, the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) and 5G Testbeds & Trials (5GTT) projects.
