RFBenchmark has published its latest crowd-sourced study into Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) speed across Europe, which reveals that the United Kingdom delivered an average download rate of 17.7Mbps (up from 16.9Mbps last year), uploads of 9.03Mbps (up from 7.85Mbps) and latency of 77ms (better than 101ms).

Mobile operator EE has this evening announced that they are aiming to “become the first operator in the world” to range the future OnePlus 5G Smartphone in 2019, which will stem from a new R&D partnership with the handset manufacturer.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has confirmed that they will remove Huawei’s kit from their core 3G and 4G network within the next 2 years. On top of that they will also exclude the Chinese company from bidding on future 5G contracts (core network only), but it’s unclear if Openreach will adopt a similar policy for fixed line broadband.

Fibre optic broadband building Cityfibre has today joined forces with wireless infrastructure company Arqiva to construct the UK’s “largest” multi-million pound pilot of a new wholesale, 5G ready Small Cell infrastructure in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Mobile operators rejoice.

A new report from Billmonitor has accused Ofcom of showing “little interest” in tackling the allegedly “Wild West” market for B2B mobile services. The investigation claimed that only one in ten small businesses get a “fair deal” from their mobile operator and EE is the most expensive UK provider for business contracts.

The latest biannual mobility report from Ericsson has revealed that the world is home to a total of 7.9 billion mobile subscriptions and this will hit 8.9 billion by 2024. Over the same period the amount of monthly mobile data (3G, 4G and 5G) traffic consumed by a Smartphone user will rise from 5.6 GigaBytes today to 21GB.

Mobile operator Three UK has begun issuing a new text message to customers, which informs those who like to roam around the EU that the existing 15GB “fair use data limit” on 3G and 4G (mobile broadband) services will be increased to 19GB from 28th December 2018 “at no extra charge“.

A new report from OpenSignal, which uses crowd-sourced data to test 4G or 3G based Mobile Broadband network performance, has revealed that in 33 countries Smartphone users now experience faster average download speeds on a mobile network (4G / 3G) than via WiFi. But not in the United Kingdom, we’re the reverse.

Mobile operator O2 UK has today announced that they’ve begun a new pilot with Nokia in parts of London (i.e. Kings Cross and Marble Arch), which will test Massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology as a way of helping to improve Mobile Broadband speeds in preparation for future 5G services.

A joint outdoor field trial by Mitsubishi and NTT DOCOMO in Japan appears to have achieved a “world’s first” by pushing the future 5G mobile network technology to deliver maximum throughput speeds of 27Gbps and 25Gbps (communication distances of 10m and 100m respectively) via one mobile terminal in the 28GHz band.

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT (Jersey Telecom) has decided to shun recent security concerns by partnering with Chinese state-owned enterprise ZTE, which will help them to build a new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network on the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey in the English Channel).

Mobile operator Three UK and Huawei have teamed-up in London to demonstrate a multi-site 5G network, which was able to deliver peak wireless broadband speeds of up to 3-4Gbps (Gigabits per second) via the 28GHz radio spectrum band and 1-2Gbps when using the 3.4GHz band.

Ovum has today published a new report, commissioned by mobile operator Three UK, which claims future 5G technology will deliver home broadband speeds of 80-100Mbps. Furthermore they predict that it could “replace traditional connections” for 85% of the UK’s 26 million fixed line ISP customers, with “equal or better speeds.”

New customers of EE’s fixed line home broadband ISP packages can already benefit from a 5GB mobile data boost if they also take one of the operator’s own mobile plans, but from today this will be boosted to 20GB. The new Black Friday offer will be available on orders made until 4th December 2018.

A new Opinium survey of 2,008 UK adults (79% from urban areas) has found that 9 million Brits (17%) won’t move to the countryside for fear of being cut off by poor broadband. Meanwhile 25% of existing rural residents say they struggle to make any mobile calls at home and 38% complained of slow or unreliable internet.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today named the first UK cities to benefit from their commercial roll-out of ultrafast multi-Gigabit capable 5G mobile and wireless home broadband technology, which is due to begin later next year. Naturally London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast are on the list.
