Ofcom has published their latest study of UK consumer complaints for Q3 2023, which names Virgin Media as the worst for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband, landline phone and pay TV services. Meanwhile, O2, which is part of the same company, attracted the most complaints for Pay Monthly Mobile services.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today highlighted the deployment of a new mobile mast to boost 4G (mobile broadband) coverage on the remote rural Shetland island, which sits far away off the north coast of Scotland. Several more masts are due to follow under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) recently started to roll-out their first new device firmware update(s) of 2024 for both their Virgin TV 360 (v5.06) and STREAM (v5.07) platforms, which make a variety of smaller changes to the User Interface (UI). But none of the changes are particularly big this time around.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) last week became the first operator to launch a 48-month contract option for customers who take one of the latest Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones alongside a mobile plan, which on the surface might appear to break Ofcom’s contract limit of 24-months. But as you’d expect, it’s not that simple.

Broadband ISP, TV and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today announced that they intend to create around 200 new graduate, intern and apprenticeship roles across the UK in 2024 (starting salaries go up to £35,000 per year), which is down from the c.350 they pledged to create during 2023.

BT’s Chief Security and Networks Officer, Howard Watson, has written a new blog post that contrasts their delivery progress on the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project (i.e. extending 4G mobile coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025) with the slower pace at Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2).

Customers of alternative UK full fibre broadband ISP Upp, which was last year acquired from investment firm LetterOne by network builder nexfibre (Virgin Media) for an undisclosed sum (here), have this week been notified that their service will be withdrawn “sometime” in 2024, when they’ll be switched to Virgin. But questions remain.

The CMO of full fibre operator CityFibre, Dan Ramsay, has today told the CEO of ISP Zen Internet, as part of a new interview, that they expect that the c.100 alternative broadband networks in the UK market today to eventually become one single operator. Ramsay separately denied that there had ever been talks of a merger with Virgin Media (VMO2).

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today published new research, which examines the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks – including EE (BT), O2 (VMO2), Vodafone and Three UK – across London. The results indicate that EE is leading the pack in most areas, at least in the UK’s capital.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which concluded that Three UK delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes. But Vodafone had the fastest average upload speeds.

The Office for National Statistics has published their latest UK inflation figures, which saw the Consumer Price Index fall to 4% (down from 10.5% this time last year) and the Retail Price Index reach 5.2% (down from 13.4%). As a result, we now know how big the annual inflation-linked price hikes will be from most of the major UK ISPs.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) and nexfibre have today announced that more than 12,000 extra homes and businesses – across both the large coastal village of Heysham and the small city of Lancaster in Lancashire (England) – can now access their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted in late November 2023, has warned that 13% of mobile users still don’t know if their phone is 4G or 5G ready and 5% say they still use a 3G handset.

Surging inflation has meant that the past couple of years have been, to put it mildly, an uncomfortable experience for many broadband ISP and mobile users. In 2022 most consumers saw their prices rise by around 9% (here) and in 2023 that hit over 14% (here), but the predicted hikes for 2024 won’t be as bad.

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have this morning become the first providers to announce that their ongoing deployment of a new 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network on the London Underground – in partnership with Boldyn Networks and Nokia – has now been extended to the Elizabeth line for the first time.
