Mobile operator Three UK has been named the best overall provider in this year’s Broadband Genie Road Trip 2012 study, which tested all of the five main Mobile Broadband operators (plus Virgin Mobile) for reliability and performance while roaming on a 2:30hr trip from King’s Cross to Exeter in England.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has signed a new deal with high street retail giant Debenhams, which will see the operators free wireless internet service being rolled out across the groups 167 shops and giving it the “largest wifi coverage of any department store in the UK“.

Mobile phone operators O2 UK (Telefonica) and Vodafone have today officially entered into a new Network Sharing agreement that will help them to “deliver the capability for a nationwide” deployment of “4G” superfast Mobile Broadband services and close the Digital Divide between rural and urban areas by targeting 98% indoor population coverage across 2G / 3G by 2015.

London’s High Court yesterday helped Golden Eye International, a firm that holds numerous film copyrights and is linked to the UK’s Ben Dover porn brand, to finalise the format of its controversial P2P internet piracy settlement letters. Thousands of O2’s broadband ISP customers (those accused of copyright infringement) can now expect to receive the letters, albeit not without some crucial limitations.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has today released its latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q1-2012), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base (includes BE Broadband customers) had continued to decline by -2,500 (net) between Q4-2011 and Q1-2012 to reach a new total of 617,800.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has today issued an update for its 2.6GHz trial of “4G” superfast Mobile Broadband Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in London, which started last November 2011 (here). Apparently its 1,000 trialists have experienced internet download speeds of between 20-50Mbps (Megabits / sec) and some tests even reached close to the 150Mbps peak.

Mobile operator O2 UK has moved to combat the growing range of data-friendly packages from rivals Three UK and T-Mobile by launching a new Pay Monthly tariff called ‘On & On‘, which from £26 a month (from £36 with a new phone) bundles unlimited minutes with unlimited texts and 1GB (GigaByte) of Mobile Broadband usage (no extra data charges will apply after that is consumed).

The UK High Court (Court 6) in central London today ruled that Golden Eye International, a firm that claims to hold numerous film copyrights and is linked with the UK’s Ben Dover porn brand, can pursue O2’s (Telefonica) broadband ISP customers to settle “suspected” cases of “illegal” internet copyright infringement (piracy). But its victory, which has set a new precedent, came with several crucial strings attached.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has warned that Ofcom’s plan to auction off the 800MHz and 2.6GHz radio spectrum frequencies, which would be used by a new generation of 4G superfast Mobile Broadband services, could be put at “further risk of delay” after the regulator allowed T-Mobile and Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) to launch the country’s first 4G service over their existing 1800MHz (3G) band.

Mitchells & Butlers, a leading operator of restaurants and pubs in the UK, has today signed a new three year agreement with mobile provider O2 for the provision of a free wireless internet (WiFi) service at 1,600 of their outlets around the country. This includes 13 different brands, such as Harvester, Toby Carvery, Vintage Inns, Browns, All Bar One and O’Neill’s.
