Ofcom has today published their Q1 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which names and shames Virgin Media UK for attracting the most moans about fixed line home broadband, Pay TV and landline phone services in the quarter, while Three UK did the same for Mobile.

Broadband ISP Plusnet has begun to inform existing customers of their YouView (IPTV) powered Pay TV box that they’ve decided to completely close the service from 1st November 2021. Subscribers will be allowed to keep their set-top-box and can continue to use it to watch Freeview channels or to access their players and apps.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics will today publish a new biannual H1 2021 report into the performance of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the United Kingdom, which praises EE (BT) for their “consistent broad availability … fast speeds and reliability.”

Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net service, has just published a new Q1-Q2 2021 (H1) study of 5G mobile broadband performance from Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2 (VMO2), which found that Three delivered the fastest average (median) download speeds of 231.07Mbps. But Vodafone wins on uploads (19.69Mbps).

The BT Group has today reported their latest Q1 2021/22 results, which among other things reports that Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 5.16 million UK premises (up from 4.6m last quarter) and 860,000 of BT’s retail ISP customers have taken the service.

Price hikes are fairly common amongst all of the largest UK broadband ISPs, which tend to increase what they charge by an average of c.4-6% with every passing year, albeit often via a mix of very different and changeable approaches. Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve built 69 new 4G mobile sites and upgraded 35 more across multiple lines in London, which has improved their network coverage and data speeds (mobile broadband) along the city’s key commuter rail routes. But the work doesn’t stop there.

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

Ofcom has published their 2021 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while Three UK did the same for mobile (86%). Generally, customer service has taken a COVID-19 hit.

A new study from consumer magazine Which? has warned that millions of UK consumers may be “at risk of being hacked in their homes” because the “outdated” broadband router they use, as supplied by several major ISPs including EE, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Vodafone, could contain potential security flaws.

After an excruciatingly long wait, budget conscious UK ISP Plusnet finally looks set to move into the ultrafast broadband era by launching their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages later this year. The product also seems likely to be accompanied by a new router (possibly a re-brand of BT’s Smart Hub 2).

Major record labels, including the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) and Phonographic Performance (PPL), have gone to the UK High Court in an attempt to force six of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to extend their website blocks for copyright infringement to include sites that facilitate stream ripping and cyberlocker Nitroflare.

The BT Group’s latest Q3 2020/21 results reveal that Openreach’s G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) network now covers a total of 6.88 million UK premises, with 4.05m coming from FTTP alone (up from 3.5m last quarter). The take-up rate for their full fibre services has also improved.
