Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which concluded that Three UK delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes. But Vodafone had the fastest average upload speeds.

A new OnePoll UK survey of 2,560 adults based in London, which was commissioned by London-focused broadband ISP and network builder G.Network, has claimed that 17% of people in the capital lose more than a day each year waiting for slow and unreliable internet connections.

Openreach (BT) are expecting to reach a record peak quarterly build rate on their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network of 1 million premises passed in Q4 FY24 (i.e. end of March 2024), which is up from the 860K seen in Q2 (Sept 2023). Commercial build costs are also said to still be below £300 per premises.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted in late November 2023, has warned that 13% of mobile users still don’t know if their phone is 4G or 5G ready and 5% say they still use a 3G handset.

Network access provider Openreach has revealed that broadband usage across their UK network of ISPs increased by around 9% during 2023 (up vs 2.5% in 2022) to total 94,722 PetaBytes (PB) of data. The results for 2023 also include data from both their “full fibre” and “superfast” networks, seemingly for the first time.

The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). Information supplied by BT and EE to ISPreview has revealed that customers on their fixed broadband ISP network delivered a modest increase in internet traffic over Christmas, but no new records were set. Christmas Day itself saw data traffic peak at 19.57Tbps (Terabits per second), which is up by 7.23% from 18.25Tbps last year.

As usual, we’re ending 2023 by taking a look back to see how the United Kingdom’s position, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband ISP and mobile (4G, 5G) data speeds, has changed since 2022. The UK fell from 44th to 51st for mobile and was unchanged at 56th for fixed lines.

As usual, improvements in FTTP and 5G coverage are continuing to fuel performance gains.

A new Uswitch commissioned Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was conducted earlier this month, has claimed that 17 million people have “lost their broadband connection or had it drop out” in the last 12 months and the average number of such incidents experienced (i.e. those lasting longer than 3 hours) came out as 33.

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

UK ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their annual round-up of customer connectivity habits for 2023, which among other things finds that broadband usage on their fixed line network increased by 13% in 2023 (up from 9% last year). Similarly, the mobile traffic and data increased by 26% in 2023 (down from 36% last year).

The Local Government Association, which represents councils across England and Wales, has warned that while the majority of councils are aware of the looming mobile network closures, almost two-thirds of them are still using devices and systems reliant on 2G and 3G connectivity to at least a small extent.

Telecoms giant BT has revealed that the overall volume of internet traffic across their fixed broadband ISP network reached a new peak of 30.1Tbps (Terabits per second) last night at around 9pm, which is up from around 28Tbps last year and 25Tbps in 2021.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a supposedly “definitive” study of fixed broadband speeds across the United Kingdom, which reveals which ISPs are delivering both the best service quality and speeds to consumers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the table ends up being topped by CommunityFibre, Virgin Media and Hyperoptic etc.

The latest independent data has revealed that a shade over 80% of “homes” across the United Kingdom can now access a gigabit-capable broadband ISP connection (1000Mbps+), which is up from just over 72% at the end of last year. The figure drops to 60% when only looking at Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology (up from 45%).

A new survey of business leaders and decision-makers from 160 UK companies, which was conducted by Neos Networks during June 2023, has claimed that one in every five UK businesses are receiving insufficient broadband speeds. Plus 42% regard moving to higher capacity connectivity in the next 2 years as key to growth plans.
