Low-cost mobile operator iD Mobile (Currys), which uses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) partnership, has today announced a 25% year-on-year growth in service subscriptions that has just seen them top the 1.5 million mark – a significant milestone reached ahead of its own projections.

Mobile operator Vodafone is continuing to try and drum up support for their proposed merger with Three UK, which today sees them publishing new research that claims “expediting” the rollout of Standalone 5G (mobile broadband) could contribute an additional £7.4bn to the UK economy by 2030 compared to a slower deployment.

Energy and telecoms provider Telecom Plus, which trades as UW (Utility Warehouse), has published their latest H1 FY24 results today and revealed that their broadband ISP has a total customer base of 363,595 (up by 22,203 in the year) and their mobile base hit 424,114 (up by 60,052). The operator also has a new CEO.

A new update from Point Topic has revealed how the top and bottom ten UK local authorities have changed over the past quarter, at least with respect to their coverage of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks. In addition, 103 local authorities now have three overlapping full fibre networks (up from 96 in Q2).

A new survey of 2,008 UK broadband customers, which was conducted between 18th to 20th October 2023 by Broadband Genie, has found that 63% feel internet providers use “confusing language” and 54% believe they “hide behind baffling jargon to squeeze more money out of customers“.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published a new report, based on analysis carried out by WPI Economics, which reveals that a “stark digital divide” still exists “between rural and urban areas” when it comes to mobile phone and 5G (mobile broadband) coverage. If only there was a mega-merger looming that could solve it.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across Hammersmith & Fulham in London, which concluded that EE delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes, while Three UK came last.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has reported that the release of Fortnite’s original map on Friday 3rd November 2023, which formed part of the popular video game’s “Fortnite OG” update, resulted in the operator experiencing a record daily surge in network traffic with a total of close to 154,000 TeraBytes (TB) being downloaded.

The BT Group has published their latest H1 FY24 results to September 2023, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added a record of 860,000 premises to their coverage (up from 718k last quarter) and now covers 11.85 million premises, with a further 6m where initial build is underway.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has today claimed that 85% of broadband ISP and mobile customers view annual price rises as “unfair” and 87% think they should be allowed to leave their provider penalty free if they raise prices mid-contract.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has published their Q3 2023 results, which sees their UK full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre expand to another 250,800 premises (up from 175.5k in Q2) and their fixed broadband base rise to 5,708,100 (up by 40.8k in Q3 vs -15.3k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a 16.67% stake in Cornerstone for £360m.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their first Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI), which is designed to enable policymakers and digital leaders to identify where a region performs well and where challenges remain when it comes to mobile (4G, 5G), gigabit broadband, skills and other areas.

A new study from Broadband Genie (BG) has analysed 265,000 consumer speed tests and found the top slowest and fastest ten streets for broadband in the UK. For example, Morriston Close in Watford (London) comes out as the slowest street, with an average download speed of 0.6Mbps, but this is only half of the story.

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q2 2023) study of UK consumer complaints, which shames Vodafone as attracting the most gripes about broadband ISPs, while TalkTalk, Shell Energy and Virgin Media tied the lowest ranking for landline phone, BT did the same for Mobile services, and Virgin Media and BT came bottom for TV.

A new Opinium survey of 500 UK adults who have moved house in the last 2 years (renters or owners), which was commissioned by Uswitch, has found that broadband is still “one of the biggest causes of frustration” when moving home – with movers being left offline for an average of 7.2 days.

But its recommendations for broadband and mobile are wafer thin.

Ofcom has today published the latest edition of their forecast for Planned Network Deployments, which predicts that the full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP lines are on course to cover 91% (27 million premises) of all UK properties by May 2026 – rising to 94% for “gigabit-capable” networks (i.e. FTTP and Cable).
