Crowd-sourced analyst firm OpenSignal has today published the first results from their initial real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 8 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service). The highest maximum speeds were seen by 5G users in the USA (1815Mbps), while the UK scored the lowest (569Mbps).

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers to help co-fund the cost of upgrading digitally isolated communities to receive their FTTC, G.fast or FTTP based superfast broadband ISP network, has now signed-up its 930th community and expects to deliver for 100,000 UK premises.

The Government’s Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, has wrongfully claimed that its Building Digital UK programme has now helped to push fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network coverage to 97% of UK premises (the expectation is that this could reach around 98% by the end of 2020).

The Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2013 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,123,530 extra premises (up by +46.9K since Q4 2018), has just published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2019. Coverage continues to grow, albeit slowly as contracts near their end.

Ofcom has today published their 2019 Communications Market Report (CMR), which reveals the latest information about the take-up and impact of Fixed Line Broadband, Phone, Mobile, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

The annual 2019 world speeds report from research firm M-Lab and Cable.co.uk has revealed that for 2019 the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) broadband ISP download speed of just 22.37Mbps (up from 18.57Mbps in 2018 and 16.51Mbps in 2017), ranking us 34th fastest in the world (up from 35th last year).

As the first half of 2019 comes to an end we’ve taken a look back to see how average broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the top fastest national fixed line ISPs and 4G mobile operators. Overall the picture is one of gradual improvement, thanks to rising take-up of faster connections.

Complaints firm Ombudsman Services, which is one of Ofcom’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) handlers for consumer broadband, phone and mobile gripes, has published a new report that notes how complaints about UK telecoms services have increased from 11% in 2018 to 12% this year.

A new study by TravelSim has analysed the number of free wifi hotspots, cost per MegaByte of data, average broadband speeds (mobile / wireless) and the number of hotels and airports with free wifi in 19 of the world’s most visited destinations to find the best and worst cities to stay connected whilst travelling.

The latest data from broadband speed testing giant Ookla (Speedtest.net) has revealed that the United Kingdom is now ranked just 42nd in the world for fixed broadband ISP download speeds (61.75Mbps average) and a dismal 49th for mobile (30.93Mbps), which compares with 29th and 46th respectively in January 2018.

Which? has conducted a new “loyalty penalty” study of entry-level “fibre broadband” and phone bundles across 12 of the biggest broadband ISPs in the UK market. This reveals that customers of Virgin Media, TalkTalk and the Post Office are hit by the biggest price hikes (up to 60%) after their initial contract ends.

The European Commission has published their 2019 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2018 to reveal how the UK’s fixed line broadband and mobile networks compare with the rest of the EU. This year we jumped in overall rank from 6th to 5th out of 28 countries but are only 10th for connectivity.

How about this for an unusual study. A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, claims to have found that 21% of respondents stopped exercising at the Gym in order to try and resolve issues with a poor signal. WiFi isn’t much better either.

Rural ISP Gigaclear, which has been struggling to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to some of England’s most challenging communities, has posted its results to the end of 2018 and revealed that they now cover 93,000 premises (up 58% over 2017) and have 19,000 live customers (up 30%).

A new survey of 2,115 UK homeowners has claimed that 62% of respondents would be willing to increase the value of an offer on a house if it was “guaranteed” to deliver “superfast broadband” ISP speeds and 25% of those would increase their offer by £3000-£5000, while 10% said they’d go over £5,000.

The Citizens Advice agency has accused Ofcom of allowing UK phone and broadband providers to “overcharge” consumers to the tune of £100m between 2014 and 2018 due to “errors” they allegedly made when setting price controls on network operators. The charity now wants to see ISPs being forced to refund it.

A new piece of research from WiredScore and the HomeOwners Alliance has claimed that British homeowners and renters are having to pay out £2.2 billion each year in “unnecessary” mobile data (3G / 4G) fees because they suffer from “poor internet” connectivity at home.
