A new report from Audit Scotland, which works to ensure that public money in Scotland is spent correctly, has found that the £410m Digital Scotland roll-out programme with BT has achieved its initial coverage target. But delivering 95% “fibre broadband” coverage by December 2017 “will be more challenging.”

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has blasted his rivals behind the Fix Britain’s Internet campaign (Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone) for making “misleading statements” and using “Orwellian tactics” in order to argue that UK broadband services would improve if the operator didn’t control Openreach.

Apparently Leicester University might only be ranked 47th for higher education, but they come top for broadband speeds – averaging a download rate of 39.87Mbps in student areas – in a new study of Internet performance conducted on 43 of the United Kingdom’s top 50 universities.

Three UK has announced that indoor mobile coverage on their 4G (LTE) network has increased from 80% in June 2013 to 92% now, which is largely thanks to the boost from their on-going roll-out of the lower frequency 800MHz band. Elsewhere 42 new roaming destinations have also been added.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published their latest Q2 2016 (calendar) results, which found that the UK cable operator had added +42,700 new broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 4,808,000 (down from +70.4K added in Q1) and their on-going network expansion has reached another 85,000 premises.

UK ISP TalkTalk has stepped up their Fix Britain’s Internet campaign against Openreach (BT) today by claiming that 4 million Brits report experiencing stress and anxiety due to slow and unreliable broadband.

The national telecoms regulator has released their 2016 Communications Market Report (CMR), which reveals the latest information about the take-up and usage of Broadband, Mobile, Phone, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (split by England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

BT has published a number of WiFi speedtests for their new Smart Hub broadband router, which pitted the kit against rival hardware from TalkTalk, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, Plusnet and EE. The results appear to support the ISPs claim that their router “provides the most powerful wi-fi,” at least in comparison to the kit bundled by their rivals.

A new study has claimed that the Government’s defunct Connection Voucher scheme, which gifted grants worth up to £3,000 to help smaller UK businesses get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed, has boosted the economy in Greater London by £3bn and will help to create 32,824 new jobs.

Consumers are still frustrated by the way in which most broadband ISPs advertise their Internet service speeds. A new online survey of 1,267 ISPreview.co.uk readers has discovered that 80.8% think the way in which providers advertise their speeds is “misleading” and 89% want tougher rules to tackle it.

BT has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q2 2016), which saw their total base of retail broadband customers top 9,117,000 (up by +76K in Q2 vs 1.045m in Q1) and 4,257,000 of those make use of their FTTC/P based Infinity superfast broadband service (up by +181K vs +214k in Q1).

Vodafone has posted their latest results to 30th June 2016 (Q2 calendar), which shows that they added +28,000 new fixed line broadband customers in the quarter to total 137,000 (up from the +20k added in Q1 and +14k in Q4 2015) and improved their UK outdoor 4G cover to 95% (Ofcom’s definition).

A new Brick Wall Index from customer service solutions provider Eckoh, which identifies call centre menus that create the highest levels of consumer frustration, has ranked TalkTalk top of its table for being one of the “worst customer service offenders” in the United Kingdom.

UK ISPs EE, BT and TalkTalk have managed to collect the greatest proportion of consumer complaints for their fixed line broadband services, at least that’s one way of reading Ofcom’s Q1 2016 consumer complaints report. Meanwhile Virgin Media and Sky Broadband attracted the fewest gripes.

The Intellectual Property Office has published its sixth study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile customers, which estimates that 15% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (6.7 million people) had consumed at least one item of “illegal” online content (down from 18% last year) and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content” (down from 6%).

The latest Akamai State of the Internet Q1 2016 study has reported that the United Kingdom’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 14.9Mbps (up from 13.9Mbps at the end of 2015) vs a global average of 6.3Mbps (up from 5.6Mbps). But sadly the UK’s country ranking has fallen yet again from 17th to 19th.

We might not have an agreed standard, commercial hardware, spectrum allocations or any real understanding of how much future 5G based Mobile Broadband technology will cost to roll-out. But Ovum still appear confident that there will be 24 million 5G subscriptions worldwide at the end of 2021.
