The Post Office, which has around 500,000 customers on their UK home phone and broadband products, appears to have recently issued a new Prior Information Notice (PIN) that seeks suppliers for “a range of goods and services in order to continue to provide telecommunications services” to consumers.

Ofcom has today published their 2019 survey of UK service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest broadband ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (79%) and Tesco Mobile did the same for mobile (90%).

The founder of Carphone Warehouse and sibling UK ISP TalkTalk, Sir Charles Dunstone, is reportedly trying to raise £400m in equity and £600m in debt to fund their as yet unrealised plans for a roll-out of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband to 3 million premises. Separately SSE may sell off their retail ISP business.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today followed Virgin Media by announcing that Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service will also be coming to their YouView (IPTV) powered Pay TV platform. The Prime Video app is being rolled out on set-top-boxes over the course of this month.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has completed the deployment of ASSIA’s CloudCheck software to their Wi-Fi Hub (Sagemcom F@st 5364) broadband router, which they claim can “proactively” improve the wireless (WiFi) performance of the device through “contextual analytics” and “machine-learning algorithms“.

Ofcom’s new system of automatic compensation will tomorrow be introduced, which requires major UK ISPs to compensate consumers (cash or bill credits) for a total loss of broadband connectivity (i.e. if the outage lasts longer than 2 working days), missed appointments or delayed installs.

The CEO of Sky UK (Sky Broadband), Stephen van Rooyen, has written a letter to the heads of several alternative “full fibre” (FTTP) network ISPs, seemingly in the hope of opening talks that could result in new wholesale or other agreements to help “increase investment” and “bring ultrafast broadband to more homes.”

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has announced that residents in the Poppleton area of York are the latest to get access to their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which as reported last week (here) has already covered 33,000 premises in the city and should reach 55,000 by 2020.

Budget orientated UK ISP TalkTalk has revealed that their roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city of York has now covered 33,000 homes and businesses. The final 21,000 premises are due to “follow this year” (54,000 total) and customer satisfaction is high.

An important change is due to be introduced tomorrow as part of Ofcom’s new Voluntary Codes of Practice on Broadband Speed (VCoP), which will require the largest UK ISPs to give you more information about your estimated line performance and make it easier to exit a contract penalty free (if faults cannot be fixed).

A complaint by UK broadband ISP Plusnet has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a website and TV advert for TalkTalk’s service, which saw them “misleadingly” claim to be the “only major provider to guarantee no mid-contract broadband price rises on all our plans.” Except they aren’t.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today teamed up with Plume to offer their existing broadband customers “exclusive” access to a new “cloud-coordinated” WiFi system that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise your home wireless network, which it claims could improve the signal’s coverage, stability and speed.

The annual uSwitch.com Awards 2019 event took place last night, which saw various wins for broadband ISPs Vodafone, Virgin Media, Plusnet and TalkTalk. Meanwhile Sky (Sky Broadband) scooped several categories for their Mobile service and sibling NOW TV scooped the best TV provider gong.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has claimed that they will tomorrow launch “Britain’s lowest fixed price fibre” unlimited broadband and phone service, which will reduce their FTTC (VDSL2) based “Faster Fibre” (36Mbps average speed) package to just £19.95 a month (currently on offer at £22.95) on an 18 month contract term.

Since the end of January a large number of BT and some of TalkTalk’s UK broadband customers have found themselves unable to get software updates and patches for Microsoft’s XBox Live, Windows Updates and Windows Store services, which stems from a data corruption issue that also affected ISPs in other countries.

The latest quarterly results from TalkTalk to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19) has seen the ISP add a further +44,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,287,000 (up from the +24k added in the previous quarter), although sadly there’s not much of an update on their “FibreNation” FTTH deployment.

Ofcom’s newest Q3 2018 UK consumer complaints report has revealed that, for the first time, ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Sky Broadband won praise for seeing the fewest moans. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.
