UK ISP TalkTalk, which has itself recently been the subject of several major hacks and related personal data breaches that sadly triggered quite a few fraudulent calls to subscribers, has today joined with Get Safe Online to launch their nationwide ‘Beat the Scammers‘ information campaign.

Ofcom has opened a new investigation after TalkTalk complained about the amount of money being charged by Openreach (BT) for their Special Fault Investigation (SFI) engineer service and Time Related Charges (TRC), which are often used to resolve customer phone or broadband problems.

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a website advert for TalkTalk’s Super Router (Huawei HG633 / HG635) hardware after BT complained that the device was making misleading performance claims, such as one that boasted of delivering “the strongest signal and fastest speeds in the UK.”

Telecoms provider TalkTalk has reduced the price of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) service to just £5 per month for 12 months (£17.50 for 6 months after that and then £19.50 thereafter), but don’t forget to add the line rental charge of £17.70 per month on top (equivalent of £15.93 a month when pre-paid for 1 year).

A new “all-industry coalition“, which represents alternative network providers and major UK players like Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone, has today put pressure on Ofcom to deliver on its Strategic Review by publishing a plan that sets out how they think the regulator should deliver a better and more independent Openreach.

After a rocky start TalkTalk appears to be on the path to recovering from last year’s cyber-attack, but not before reporting that they ended Q1 2016 (calendar) with a total of 3,996,000 on-net broadband subscribers (down from 4.1 million six months ago). Elsewhere mobile customers might be in for a difficult transition.

Customers of TalkTalk’s broadband based TV service may be pleased to learn that the premium BTSport content will be available to them from June 2016, which means that they’ll be able to subscribe to the related TV channels on a rolling monthly contract directly from BT.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) will this week unveil their final proposals for clearing up misleading broadband prices and TalkTalk is the first to jump, with the ISP pledging to adopt a single “all-in pricing” for their bundles of broadband, phone (line rental) and / or mobile and TV.

The UK telecoms regulator is consulting on a request from TalkTalk to vary concurrent spectrum access licences for 3.3MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800MHz band, which would support the ISP’s plan to launch a new broadband router with small cell based 4G (LTE) mobile femtocell technology inside.

It’s officially been two years since Cityfibre, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk announced their Joint Venture (here) to roll-out a new 940Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the city of York in England, but we’re still not clear when it will launch or whether it will progress beyond Phase One.

In a somewhat unsurprising development Sky’s (Sky Broadband) CEO, Jeremy Darroch, appears to have now officially ruled the operator out from any ambition to build its own national ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTP/H) network in the United Kingdom.

Internet provider BT has today replaced their old Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL) based 38Mbps BTInfinity 1 broadband service with a new up to 52Mbps package speed, which they brag is “a faster standard fibre service” than you can get from Sky Broadband, TalkTalk or Virgin Media.
