Customers of TalkTalk’s home broadband service can now download a new Talk2Go app for Android and iOS (iPhone etc.), which allows them to make and receive calls (i.e. using their landline minutes) whilst out and about on 3G or 4G based mobile broadband or over Wi-Fi connections (charged at the same rate as if they were at home).

Budget Internet provider TalkTalk has praised the success of their “ground-breaking” Project Genesis system (not to be confused with the world-colonising ‘Genesis Device’ from StarTrek 2), which helps to tackle broadband and phone connection faults by carrying out thousands of line checks every day and automatically raising fault tickets if it finds a problem. Sadly it cannot currently resurrect Vulcan science officers.

Several weeks ago the Director of BT’s Superfast Broadband Programme in Cornwall, Ranulf Scarbrough, comically complained to us and others that TalkTalk had “stolen our rocket!“. At the time we chuckled and moved on from what appeared to be little more than a bit of comedy jesting between competitive foes in the ISP sector, but today it’s made the news.

Customers of TalkTalk’s Internet service in the United Kingdom are slowly beginning to see their email (@talktalk.net) return to normal after an unspecified problem with the ISPs related services prevented them from gaining access, often by throwing up authentication (login/password) errors.

The endless jostling for dominance of the United Kingdom’s fixed line broadband and mobile telecoms market has continued after reports appeared to suggest that BT’s move to grab either O2 or EE, which was mirrored by a similar approach from Three UK’s parent, has pushed Vodafone back towards a potential acquisition of Virgin Media (Liberty Global) or possibly one of the other big fixed line ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk or Sky Broadband).

The UK Competitive Telecommunications Association, which aims to foster a more competitive fixed telecommunications market and counts most of BT’s major rivals among its ranks (e.g. Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Vodafone, Sky Broadband etc.), has called on Ofcom to improve competition by among other things opening up BT’s passive infrastructure to all providers and launching another market review; although one is already underway.

Customers who pay off their TalkTalk bill early (i.e. within 24 hours of receiving the bill notification email) could until recently benefit from a so-called “Speedy Payment Discount” of 15%, but this has now been quietly reduced to just 10% and follows hot on the heels of the ISPs other recent price rises.

17th November, 2014 (4 Comments)

Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has confirmed that their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone will be coming to an end after the ISP signed a new multi-year deal with Telefonica UK (O2) to take over the management of their mobile customer base.

15th November, 2014 (3 Comments)

New information suggests that broadband and phone provider TalkTalk could be close to off-loading some or all of their off-net customers to another ISP (i.e. those based off BT’s network rather than their own unbundled / LLU platform), although no deal has yet been officially signed.

14th November, 2014 (14 Comments)

The United Kingdom’s largest four broadband ISPs, including BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk, have reached an agreement with the Government to block their customers from accessing terrorist and extremist material on the Internet. The ISPs will also offer a reporting button so that the public can notify providers when new sites crop up (we’re sure nobody will spam that with comical suggestions).

The Joint Venture (JV) between CityFibre, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband, which aims to roll-out a 1000Mbps capable fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network to homes across the city of York and two further cities in the near future, has established a new company to help manage and oversee the project – Bolt Pro Tem Limited (company no. 08975479).

13th November, 2014 (127 Comments)

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has reportedly sold 100,000 of its old copper-line based Virgin National (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) broadband subscribers to rival ISP TalkTalk.

A circular advert for TalkTalk’s broadband package has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for being “misleading” after it claimed that the ISPs new Super Router device was able to offer subscribers “unbeatable signal strength” and the “UK’s fastest Wi-Fi technology.” Oops.

11th November, 2014 (5 Comments)

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has published their latest Q3-2014 (calendar) results, which saw broadband subscribers increase by +15,000 in the quarter to total 4,221,000 (up from +10k in Q2 and the same in Q1). Meanwhile the joint roll-out of their 1Gbps capable FTTP broadband network in York has finally started the build phase. A new Talk2Go app for iOS and Android is also out (i.e. mobile calls over a fixed line).

The ever changing landscape of broadband Internet-based TV (IPTV), video and movie streaming services in the United Kingdom has taken an interesting twist over the past few days with a number of major cross-platform and content partnership deals, a few of which may come as a surprise.

Budget ISP TalkTalk is understandably keen to move away from last month’s price hike news (here) and have today announced a new offer that cuts the price of their triple-play broadband, phone and TV (YouView) bundles in half for the first 12 months of service (note: 18 month contract applies). Subscribers will also get a £75 Love2shop Voucher.

29th October, 2014 (18 Comments)

Budget ISP TalkTalk has predictably announced a raft of annual price rises and service changes for their broadband and phone products, most of which will be introduced on 1st December 2014. Customers who don’t like the changes have been told that they can “cancel by contacting us within 30 days of receiving your price notification letter“. But some new benefits have also been added (free mobile SIMs for Plus TV etc.).
