Cable operator Virgin Media appears to be gearing up for another round of broadband speed boosting after its website was updated to mention the launch of a new unlimited 150Mbps 152Mbps (12Mbps upload) service. Similarly a growing number of existing customers are being told to expect a big performance upgrade.

Cable operator Virgin Media Business confirms that it has completed the build of their new “super-fast” public wifi wireless Internet hotspot service in the centre of Birmingham, which covers around 2.5 square miles of the city and offers “no usage limits“.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published its latest Q3-2013 (calendar) results and confirmed that their total broadband ISP subscriber base has crept upwards by +13,600 in the quarter to total 4,488,600, which follows a slight fall of -15.5k during the prior Q2 period. Network coverage has also improved.

A new survey of 1,534 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 89.4% of respondents have at some point needed to call out a telecoms engineer (such as those dispatched by BTOpenreach or Virgin Media) to help resolve a broadband or phone issue. Sadly the majority (75.7%) said they were often dissatisfied with the final outcome.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again banned two Virgin Media broadband adverts for promoting “unlimited downloads” with “no caps” on data usage because the ISPs Traffic Management Policy (TMP) was found to contradict this by imposing an “immoderate” restriction on customers service speeds.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that its SmartCall service, which allows Smartphone (Android and iPhone) users with a Virgin Phone Line to use the unlimited calls from their talk plan on their mobile (so long as you have a wifi internet connection), is now finally available to use after first launching one year ago.

Cable provider Virgin Media appears to have once again been forced to tweak its broadband Traffic Management Policy (TMP) after fresh concerns were raised about whether or not their restrictions were moderate enough for an “unlimited” service. As a result the operator has cut its max peak time speed reduction for downloads from -40% to just -16%.

The government of the United Kingdom has so far committed around £1.2bn in public funding to help make fixed line superfast broadband speeds of 25Mbps+ available to 95% of the country by 2017. But the latest ISPreview.co.uk survey of 2,197 people has found that 67.2% of respondents would like even more state aid to be spent.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has finally given up on its copper-based Virgin National Broadband (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) platform, which has seen its subscriber base decline for the best part of two years and recently lost another -12,300 during Q2-2013 to reach a total customer base of 168,600.
