The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed its latest customer complaints data for the UK’s largest fixed line broadband and mobile providers (those with a market share of +4%), which covers the second quarter (Q2-2012). Happily ISP complaints saw a sharp fall but TalkTalk remains the provider with most complaints.

The Director of Virgin Media’s mobile division, Jamie Heywood, has confirmed that the operator is talking to EE (Everything Everywhere) about extending its existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) contract to include the forthcoming launch of superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband technology.

The government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, has today confirmed the final funding allocations for 10 of the largest UK cities (including all four capitals) in its now £114.1m strong Urban Broadband Fund, which aims to support the roll-out of “ultrafast” (80-100Mbps) broadband ISP services and “high speed public wi-fi“.

Customers of cable operator Virgin Media are continuing to complain of problems with the ISPs SuperHub wireless router / modem kit, which is shipped alongside their superfast broadband packages. Thankfully a new firmware is on the way and this one might just fix the device for good; but we did say “might“.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today announced the launch of its new triple-play Classic Collection package, which bundles together a 30Mbps superfast broadband service with TV (includes 500GB TiVo box and 58 channels) and free unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin Mobiles from £9 a month.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK, which has so far connected 72 London underground tube stations to its free public wireless internet (WiFi) network (the last 48 [total 120] are due to go live before the end of 2012), has reported a huge uptake of the service.

The results from 1068 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly web-based survey has revealed that 63.6% would never return to a broadband ISP that had previously caused them problems and 78.3% are now unwilling to sacrifice quality for a cheaper price. Can ISPs ever overcome a bad reputation?

Ofcom’s latest broadband speeds report (released this week) also includes a unique and useful insight into the Latency (Ping) and Packet Loss performance of the UK’s largest ISPs, which can have a serious impact upon the performance of specific internet applications (e.g. online video games, Skype etc.). But which provider is best?

National UK cable operator Virgin Media has this week become one of the last big fixed line broadband ISPs to block customers from being able to access the Newzbin (Newzbin2) website, which is deemed by the High Court to be a site that facilitates internet piracy (copyright infringement).

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today revealed that some 10% (2 million+) of the United Kingdom’s fixed line ISP subscribers were connected via a superfast broadband (25Mbps+) service at the start of July 2012, which leaves 16.3 million on standard broadband products with sub-25Mbps speeds (total 21.3 million). But problems remain.

National UK cable operator Virgin Media has cut the price of their superfast broadband bundles by adding a £25 credit to dual-play (broadband and phone) packages and £50 credit on triple-play “Collections” (broadband, phone and tv). This also combines with their various existing free installation and 6 months reduced price promotions.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has told ISPreview.co.uk that it will launch a 200Mbps or faster (i.e. 400Mbps) broadband product only “when we think the time is right” (e.g. when consumers demand it), which is despite four years ago setting itself a launch target of 2012. So when will the time be right?

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has, yet again, upheld complaints against two “misleading” TV and website adverts for Virgin Media’s superfast broadband packages. In particular BT successfully challenged Virgin’s claim that its service did not suffer from “buffering” on internet video streams.

National UK cable operator Virgin Media has today released its latest quarterly results (Q2-2012), which saw their broadband ISP subscriber base increase by just +4,000 in the quarter to total 4,385,600 (significantly down on the +30,500 added in Q1-2012 and +17,500 in Q4-2011). But what of a future 200Mbps product?

Community engagement group One Voice has managed to secure “significant investment” from Virgin Media that will see the cable operator expanding its 120Mbps (Megabits) capable broadband services into the communities of Habrough and Stallingborough in north east Lincolnshire UK.
