Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today highlighted the latest “independent testing” from the University of Bristol and Farncombe, which appears to show that their new SuperHub wireless broadband router offers better home WiFi performance than BT’s equivalent HomeHub4. It also beat similar kit from Sky Broadband and TalkTalk.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has rejected two BT complaints against a TV advert for Virgin Media’s service that featured actor David Tennant. BT claimed that Virgin’s advert “misleadingly implied that VirginMedia customers always received “superfast” broadband speeds” and “exaggerated the difference in the performance“.

Sky Broadband has moved to reassure people after some of their customers noticed that the third-party SessionCam service appeared to be monitoring private activity upon sensitive parts of the ISPs online account management (My Sky) pages, such as the page for entering payment details.

Sony has announced that its forthcoming PlayStation 4 (PS4) video games console, which is officially confirmed to arrive in the United Kingdom on 29th November 2013, has chosen broadband provider Virgin Media to be its main ISP partner. Rumours of a new 200Mbps product are also floating around.

Customers of Virgin Media’s superfast 30Mbps and legacy 20Mbps cable broadband packages have been advised that the monthly price they pay will, effective from 1st October 2013, rise by an extra £2.50 a month.

Cable operator Virgin Media and rival telecoms giant BT have finally agreed a three-year wholesale deal that should bring the new BTSport TV content to millions of Virgin’s customers. The agreement is expected to take effect from this weekend.

An interesting new study from social media analyst WaveMetrix has taken a look at the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs to discover which gives the best support via Twitter. The study found that good support is about more than being the fastest to reply. Just ask Virgin Media, which wasn’t the fastest like Sky Broadband but still did well.

Naturally BT and Virgin Media have begun promoting their own solutions with 9 month contract terms but there are other options.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) have today reported their latest Q2-2013 financial results, which revealed that its total broadband ISP subscriber base had shrunk by -15,500 in the last quarter (down from +25.5k in Q1-2013 and +51.6k in Q4-2012) to total 4,475,000.

Ofcom has published their annual 2013 Communications Market Report, which covers everything about the United Kingdom’s media and telecom industries. The study reveals that NGA / superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP services are now available to 73% of the country (up from 65% last year) and uptake has surged to 17.5% (up from just 6.5%) or 3.8 million subscribers.

Ofcom has published the outcome from their latest mystery shopping study into fixed line ISP compliance with the regulators rules concerning how broadband speeds should be sold and communicated to consumers. Suffice to say that some providers (TalkTalk and O2) have fallen short of expectations but overall the market has improved.

As expected the Birmingham City Council (BCC) has signed a new deal with Virgin Media Business (VMB) that will result in the operator rolling out an unlimited free wireless internet (wifi) zone across key parts of the city centre. The latest 3G and 4G (mobile) based small cell technology will also be deployed.

Virgin Media Business has today released more information about its “significant” ten-year deal with O2 (Telefonica UK) for the provision of new backhaul network capacity to 1,500 sites, which is intended to help “supercharge data speeds” and support the operators imminent launch of 4G based mobile broadband services.

The latest map from Point Topic has revealed that uptake of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) based internet connections in the United Kingdom has now reached 20% (Q1-2013), which is largely thanks to Virgin Media’s effort to double its customers speeds and thus lift several million consumers into the same area of performance.
