As part of their £5bn Project Gigabit programme the UK Government will this week (8th April) start a new rural focused £210m gigabit broadband voucher scheme. A quick look at the new Terms and Conditions for this reveals some key changes, such as the inclusion of satellite, a £100k funding cap on project changes and other caveats.

The Government’s new £210m UK Gigabit Voucher scheme, which is due to launch on 8th April 2021 and will help to spread 1Gbps capable broadband into some of the most remote rural areas, is facing somewhat of a backlash from communities that may find some or all of their homes being excluded under the new eligibility criteria.

The Welsh Government (WG) has today published a new Digital Strategy for Wales, which among other things sets out how they will use the levers at their disposal to support the public sector, businesses and homes in Wales to receive the broadband and mobile connectivity they need. But at this stage it’s all still a bit vague.

The Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) in Wales has issued an update on their gigabit-capable broadband rollout project for rural areas, which confirms the Phase 2 and Phase 3 deployment areas where Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband) and Voneus will be extending their network coverage.

The UK Government has today revealed new details of how their £5bn gigabit broadband roll-out scheme will work and rebranded it as “Project Gigabit“. As part of that they’ve also confirmed £210m for an extension of their rural Gigabit Voucher scheme and £110m to connect up to 7,000 rural GP surgeries, libraries and schools.

The Ceredigion County Council (CCC) in Wales has published a list of rural communities that they say “could soon” gain access to a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP connection after a number of suppliers, backed by government voucher schemes, proposed tentative plans to deploy across them.

The Government has confirmed that EE (BT), O2, Three UK and Vodafone yesterday signed a “key agreement” as part of the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which sets out a contract for how the four operators will work together to build new sites that deliver 4G based mobile broadband coverage across “total not spots.”

Rural network operator Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) has announced that their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service has just been extended to connect homes around six more villages in Monmouthshire (South Wales) as part of a £2 million scheme.

Residents in the rural village of Llanvaches near Newport (South Wales) will soon be able to benefit from a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network thanks to UK ISP Spectrum Internet, which is being part-funded by the Rural Gigabit Voucher Scheme. But Openreach’s rival state aid supported rollout isn’t far behind.

The Welsh Government has issued a Q4 2020 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 39,000 extra premises in rural Wales. The data to December 2020 shows 15,649 premises have now been completed.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that, as part of the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) industry project, they will expand their 4G (mobile broadband) network in 579 rural areas during 2021 in order to improve signal coverage (333 in England, 132 in Scotland, 76 in Wales, and 38 in Northern Ireland).

New UK ISP WeFibre, which is part of the wider Telcom Group (including sibling operator ClearFibre), has revealed to ISPreview.co.uk that they intend to deploy their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to serve 9 rural communities in Cumbria and West Wales.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has published the results from their annual (2020) survey of 430 members, which found that just 20% of farmers had access to fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 17% last year) and 11% have no indoor mobile signal at all (better than the 15% recorded last year).

A new study commissioned by O2 UK has predicted that the first phase of the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with Vodafone and Three UK, which will see all three mobile operators working to build and share 222 new 4G (mobile broadband) masts (here), could increase the turnover for rural businesses by £187.7m per annum.

Cardiff-based UK ISP Spectrum Internet, which is investing £200m on a deployment of 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to reach 150,000 premises in South Wales by late 2025 (here), has today appointed two familiar industry leaders, Justin Leese and Steve Cooper, to their executive team.

The UK Government (DCMS / BDUK) has confirmed a few more details about the future of their £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme to broadband ISPs, which is due to end on the 31st March 2021 but is widely expected to be superseded by a new programme with a fresh pot of “over” £250m.

Wireless and full fibre broadband ISP Dyfed Superfast (Dyfed IT), which primarily serves a few remote rural parts of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in Wales, has become the latest alternative internet provider to be acquired by UK ISP Voneus for an undisclosed sum.
