Netomnia FTTP Broadband UK Rollout Map to 2023

Full Fibre network builder Netomnia, which is supported by broadband ISP partner YouFibre, has today revealed that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network now covers 210,000 UK premises (up from 130,000 in April 2022) and they’ve also published their rollout plan to 2023.

Broadband ISP Ogi, which is busy investing £200m to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 150,000 premises across South Wales by 2025 (here and here), has teamed-up with a local art gallery – Breakout Gallery – in Haverfordwest to give their street cabinets a rather.. unique look.

The Welsh Parliament‘s Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee (CCEIC) has today publish a new report into the state of broadband internet access across Wales, which makes 10 recommendations for how the UK and Welsh Government’s could improve connectivity and fill the remaining gaps.

The Welsh Government has issued an easy to miss statement on Digital Connectivity in Wales, which among other things reveals that their £52.5m Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout contract with Openreach (BT) is now expected to cover slightly more premises. But this will push completion back to 31st March 2023.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today “dismissed” CityFibre’s attempt to challenge Ofcom’s approval of Openreach’s (BT) “Equinox” offer (here), which introduced a “major” price cut (details) at wholesale to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for UK ISPs. But the operator is far from giving up.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H1 2022 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have boosted their reach to 37.61% of premises (up from 30.23% in H2 2021) and 69.24% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 65.22%). But the results vary around England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland.

The Government has tonight announced that a joint £82m investment by the Departments for Culture (DCMS) and Education (DfE) will mean that, over the next 3 years, as many as 3,000 primary schools across rural England will now get access to broadband (full fibre) speeds of up to 1000Mbps.

The Welsh Government has just shared a Q1 2022 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 29,959 extra premises (up from 25,855 in Q4 2021) have now gained access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Network builder Netomnia, which is being supported by broadband ISP partner YouFibre, has today added 11,000 premises in the Gloucestershire town of Tewkesbury to the rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network. Meanwhile, YouFibre has just gone live in Barry, South Wales.

Vodafone Self Powering UK Mobile Phone Mast

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today switched on what they claim is the country’s first wind and solar-powered 4G mobile phone masts, which went live as part of a new trial in rural Pembrokeshire (Wales). The new technology is intended to help cover “not-spots” in the most remote and inaccessible locations.

Broadband ISP Ogi has just issued a brief progress update to celebrate the first year of their £200m effort to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across South Wales (here and here), which initially aims to cover 150,000 premises by the end of 2025 (they’ve almost completed 23,000).

Macquarie Capital backed UK ISP Voneus, which has a “near term” plan to cover 100,000 homes in UK rural areas (here) with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network (they also operate a Fixed Wireless Access service), has revealed that they’re looking to cover 10,500 homes in North Pembrokeshire (Wales).

A serious broadband outage that began in Wrexham (Wales) yesterday afternoon, which is affecting multiple ISPs and around 6,000 premises, appears to have been caused after one of Openreach’s contractors ended up cutting through their own fibre optic cable.

The Welsh Government’s £10m Local Broadband Fund, which was setup in 2020 to help local authorities and social enterprises to deliver broadband projects to areas that need it, has been given a funding “boost” of £9m. The money will provide better connectivity to communities in Cardiff, Newport, Vale of Glamorgan and North Wales.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today published a Spring 2022 progress update for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which among other things adds new regional procurements in Norfolk and Suffolk and two local supplier procurements in Cornwall, potentially extending 1Gbps speeds to c.190,000 premises.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 33% of the UK (up from 28% in Sept 2021), while 19.3 million homes (66%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 47%). Geographic 5G coverage has also improved.

Some 1,200 customers on Openreach’s broadband and phone network in Wrexham (Wales) have been left disconnected again after the operator’s local network was hit by yet another theft of copper telecoms cable, which appears to have occurred in roughly the same area as two prior thefts earlier this month (here).
