The Government’s £1.7bn publicly funded Broadband Delivery UK scheme, which has so far helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,076,552 extra premises since 2013, has today published its latest take-up data to the end of 2018. The good news is it continues to grow and boost coverage.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that Birmingham New Street is the first train station in the United Kingdom to be upgraded with their future 5G mobile technology as part of a live trial. Sadly a speedtest of the network struggled to get anywhere close to the often promoted Gigabit broadband speeds.

Worcester-based ISP Airband has announced that they’ve begun the state aid supported roll-out of a new hybrid wireless and fibre optic broadband network to cover 10 rural communities (dispersed clusters) in Herefordshire (England), which forms part of a contract with the wider Fastershire programme.

A little known Bude-based fixed wireless access ISP called Cornwall Broadband, which serves homes and businesses across parts of Cornwall and Devon in England, is said to be considering the possibility of expanding their rural network coverage by harnessing local church spires.

Local residents, businesses and visitors to the West Yorkshire market town of Wetherby can now access wireless internet speeds of up to 1Gbps from a free public WiFi network, which is being run by Harrogate-based ISP IntechnologyWiFi on behalf of the Town Council.

Mobile operator Vodafone has warned that it would consider a legal challenge against Ofcom’s forthcoming auction of the 5G friendly radio spectrum bands at 700MHz and 3.6GHz – 3.8GH, unless the regulator changes their proposed strategy of auctioning these as part of a bundled package.

The ITS Technology Group has joined forces with the Wilton Centre in order to launch a new “superfast” hybrid fibre optic and fixed wireless broadband ISP network, which is designed to reach poorly served businesses and possibly even homes around part of Teesside.

Homes around part of Loch Striven (Argyll and Bute) in Western Scotland will soon be able to access “superfast broadband” speeds of up to 30Mbps, which comes after Sheffield-based ISP Whitespace Technology announced they would be deploying a new TV White Space (TVWS) using wireless network in the area.

The latest forecast from the Government’s £1.8bn Broadband Delivery UK programme appears to now be predicting that fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable ISP networks will cover 97% of premises by March 2020, which is slightly down on some previous 98%+ remarks (not official targets).

Poole-based UK ISP Juice Broadband, which offers a mix of “full fibre” (FTTP) and wireless network solutions to homes and businesses along Dorset’s south coast, has extended their ultrafast fixed wireless broadband service to cover Bournemouth’s Lansdowne and Town Centre areas.

Multi-Gigabit speed Mobile Broadband has taken another step forward today after Vodafone announced a list of 19 UK cities and towns that will be the first to benefit from their commercial roll-out of 5G mobile technology in 2019, which is being fuelled by a 10Gbps capable fibre optic (backhaul) network.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Airband, which last year secured an investment of £16m and hopes to bring superfast broadband to a further 50,000 premises across England and Wales by 2021, has reported that they’ve nearly doubled their staff and have moved into a new Worcester office (Kirkham House).

Complaints made by UK ISPs BT and Virgin Media have today resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a TV advert for Sky Broadband, which was found to have been “misleading” in its claims that their tech team could easily boost WiFi throughout your home with a simple action.

The Broadband Forum has released the first Indoor Wi-Fi Performance Test Standard (TR-398), which is the result of an industry collaboration to produce a standard for testing Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) performance in the home. This may make it easier to compare WiFi on different ISP routers and devices.

A new partnership between Blu Wireless, Network Rail, the Department for Transport, DCMS and FirstGroup has been announced that could see Gigabit capable 5G Fixed Wireless Broadband being installed on-board trains for South Western Railway, Great Western Railway, the TransPennine Express and Hull Trains.
