The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has today named the first 21 communities (i.e. 9,000 initial homes and businesses) that will benefit from Gigaclear’s roll-out of a new 1Gbps FTTP broadband network in the region, which is due to start deploying from November 2017.

Five of BT’s new InLinkUK kiosks in London have just been tested to see if they’re able to deliver WiFi speeds of close to the advertised “up to 1Gbps” capability. Sadly the average speed after 43 tests was 47.4Mbps download and 44Mbps upload, with a standard download deviation of 19.5Mbps.

In an interesting twist Satellite Solutions Worldwide, which owns the UK and Pan-European Satellite ISP Europasat, has acquired rural fixed wireless broadband provider Quickline for an initial consideration of £5 million (£3m cash and £2m shares). A further £2 million is also be invested to grow the business.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to free up an extra 20MHz notch of radio spectrum in the 5.8GHz band, which is currently used for road tolling systems, so that it can be harnessed to boost the speed of existing outdoor Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) providers.

Wireless infrastructure builder Arqiva and Samsung have confirmed that London’s first trial of an ultrafast 5G based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network, which uses the 28GHz millimetre wave radio spectrum band to offer multi-Gigabit speeds, has gone live in London.

Ultrafast “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear has won the final Lot 1 contract (Upper CDS) of the Connecting Devon and Somerset project, which will see £10.3m being invested to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) network to 6,500 rural premises around Bath and North Somerset.

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today made an additional 125MHz of radio spectrum available to WiFi networks (Wireless Local Area Networks – WLAN) by introducing support for the 5.8GHz (5725 – 5850MHz) radio spectrum sub-band to deliver faster speeds.
