The not-for-profit Federation Against Software Theft (FAST), which campaigns for the legitimate use of software, has called on the UK government to extend its controversial anti-piracy Digital Economy Act (DEAct) to tackle customers using the next generation of 4G connectivity and public wi-fi.

The UK governments Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) looks set to award £360,000 to help the community group Uppingham First deploy a 30Mbps (Megabits per second) capable superfast wireless broadband network that can reach isolated parts of rural East Leicestershire and Rutland (England).

The boss of UK Broadband, sibling of Hong Kong telecoms giant PCCW, has called upon the government and telecoms operators to adopt a more “joined-up” network design to achieve their superfast broadband goals and suggested that we should be aiming to deliver download speeds of “at least 30Mbps” (same as the EU target for 2020).
