Some 1,500 full-time students and staff at the Isle of Wight College (IoWC) look set to benefit after a major IT upgrade delivered campus-wide access to free wireless broadband (wifi) and Internet telephony.

Telecoms operator BT has today announced the completion of its plan to deploy 500,000 wireless hotspots (wifi), each offering internet access across Greater London, for the 2012 Olympic Games. The move was made possible after the operator added a batch of new hotspots along 27 miles of the River Thames.

Greentomatocars has allegedly become the first minicab firm in Europe to deploy a free wireless internet (wifi) service across its entire fleet of 300 energy efficient hybrid taxis in London (England). Cable operator Virgin Media has today confirmed that 41 London underground tube stations have been connected to its free public wireless internet access (WiFi) service, which will rise to 82 before the end of July 2012 and 120 before the end of this year.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has signed a new deal with high street retail giant Debenhams, which will see the operators free wireless internet service being rolled out across the groups 167 shops and giving it the “largest wifi coverage of any department store in the UK“.

Sky Broadband Study Names Leeds City as WiFi Capital of the UK

ISP Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today published new research into the wireless internet (Hotspot) usage in 10 of the UK’s biggest cities, which found that 22% of people in Leeds have used public WiFi in the past 24 hours. That’s twice the national average (11%) and above London’s result of 20% (Manchester and Birmingham scored 13% each).
