UK ISP Tiscali is to begin migrating customers on 27 of BT's London exchanges onto its own unbundled (
LLU) broadband platform from tomorrow:
If this proves successful, Tiscali has ambitious plans to install its kit in a further 200 exchanges by the end of the year with an eye on 600 exchanges by 2006/7.
News of Tiscali's LLU plans were revealed on the same day to announced that it has chosen Huawei Technologies to supply the kit needed roll out LLU in the UK. The Huawei equipment - which is already supporting more than a million lines across Europe - is already being installed as part of Tiscali's initial LLU trial.
In April Tiscali announced that it planned is to plough 90m (£61m) into unbundled broadband services in the UK over the next three years as part of a renewed effort to secure a sizeable share of this ever-growing sector. The Register reports that those being moved onto the new platform shouldn't notice much difference. Indeed the move, which is selective and would appear to split customers between BT/non-BT platforms, is perhaps more about saving money.
Hopefully Tiscali will be careful not to split the platforms up too much in terms of services/price, which has been shown to confuse new customers on other providers.
